steve worthham, planning department staff and project manager for the central somma plan. this is our 11th hearing on the central soma plan. just saying. and this is the first time we've been here since august 31 of last year. so as anne-marie said, it is our job to catch up on all the things that have happened since then. briefly, a refresher on the plan. our plan's vision is straight forward -- to have a sustainable neighbourhood, economically, socially and environmentally. our philosophy is to keep what's great and fix what's not. there is a lot of great thing about central soma. the people in the neighbourhood are amazing. there is a diversity of residents and jobs and cultures. it's a great location between downtown and mission bay. there's a unique mix of buildings and uses. there's so many organisations on the ground today already doing great work in the neighbourhood. there are a lot of things that aren't so great about the neighbourhood, though. the rent is too high, the air quality is not too great, there is a distinct lack of greenery and open space. the streets

this shows that somma filipinos as well as the broader working class soma community has been impacted by unjust housing policies. we believe that, if done properly, the central soma-area plan can correct some of the institutional wrongs and not only stabilize and preserve community, but create pathways for some of the most disenfranchised people to thrive. stabilization, cultural preservation can be accomplished by developing a comprehensive strategy that protects the existing affordable housing stock while also expanding affordable housing development. we need to invest in our local workforce. as the south of market experience unprecedented growth in multiple industries, our local indigenous workforce needs to have access to living wage jobs. additionally, we need policies that support the aspiring neighbourhood growing businesses and also protect long-term cultural legacy businesses. as an example, soma filipinos' night market has brougtz over 10,000 people to the old mint and has generated an average of $60,000 in economic activity in a single night. lastly, the central soma plan c
