please welcome founder and executive director bryan stevenson, and grammy award-nominated singer/songwriter ( cheers and applause ) thank you so much for being on the show. there is no easy way to get into this subject. in a week, there's been so much talk about history and heritage. people talking about monuments in america. people talking about the history of america. but in many ways, bryan, you would argue that the history people wish to-- wish to remember for all of america is not really the full story. what is your project about? >> well, it's about confronting the fact that we're not really free in america. i think we're burdened by a history of racial inequality that we have not addressed. to me, the great evil of slavery wasn't involuntary servitude. it wasn't forced labor. it was this ideology of white supremacy. the idea that black people aren't like white people. and because of that, i don't think slavery ended in 1865. i think it evolved, and it turned into decades of terrorism and violence. and we don't understand that history, and that's why we started this project. between t

i didn't want to be a singer, songwriter, entertainer. i wanted to be a forest ranger. i didn't like being around large crowds of people. i thought forestry. i'll sit on a mountain in montana and wait for a fire for a couple years and then every night i wanted to go -- in my dreams, i would sit on the back porch and play muse wick friends. i actually went to school in billings to do just that. and it just didn't work out. >> you got pulled in anyway. >> so i didn't mean to be me. but at some point i realized that i was dealing with something that was bigger than me. >> when did you stop resist the call, the vocation? >> i left montana in the fall of 1965. i went to visit some friends that had an old church. i got involved taking out their garbage. and the tale -- that was '65. the tale i told about it sort of took a year to put together. so alice's restaurant took about a year. and then i performed it in the summer of 1967 at the newport folk festival. and i remember -- i wasn't scheduled to play there. i twlenlt with went there with e all the other people. but then at

completely unlinked series of observation and a hit song is excessive confidence on the part of the songwriter >> i think that's a lovely way to look at it, but he's lowballing himself because it would be trivially easy to program a computer to spit out observations that might rhyme and might have words associated with love and lost in them. you can program a computer pretty easily but we are incredibly confident that the lyrics would probably not make a lot of sense and would not activate any emotions on the part of the rest of us. what great human lyricist do, they have a fairly linked observation that resonates with other human beings, and that's a skill we have not seen computers come up with yet. it's a common set comsat engine concept from linguistics. what it means is if i look at almost any length of can plex sentence in english, i can immediately tell if it's canonically correct or not before my brain has processed its meaning or what it's trying to convey. my bet brain is trying to determine if it's kosher or not. i spent speak some french but i can't do that to save my life. english

he wanted to be a singer/songwriter.ongs. but i don't think he's ever wanted to organize even as much as someone like springsteen has who's been much more involved that way. >> right. what about guthrie? >> guthrie made most of his living and spent most of his time playing for communist gatherings. >> guthrie died in '67, right? so he's got, i mean, we never really know what would have happened in his career had he lived long must have to -- do you feel like, what do you think he might have done if he had that -- >> well, he was sick by 55, by the mid '50s, you know, he couldn't play guitar. essentially, he was in a hospital. so there's -- what would he have done? i don't know. he would have made trouble. it was what he was very good at. you know, it's hard to predict. i think he probably would have -- you know, guthrie walk out on a lot of events that would have made him famous. he had jobs, he had radio jobs, national radio jobs, and he just said i don't want to do -- i don't like the feel of this ande would walk away.

to write a musical once, he'd get really into sculpture, he moved to nashville to be a country songwriter, he enjoyed all kinds of, he saw the arts as one thing. you know, they're just fingers on one hand, you know. and so i grew up in a house that preached that. and so i grew up around a lot of different instruments, and i've never been very good at them, but i like the piano and i like the guitar. - you play a little bit. - play a little bit. and so it was fun and easy for me. i mean easy in that i enjoyed doing it, it was fun to have an excuse to take trumpet lessons. and somebody else is paying for it. - may not do it again. - to my great, i loved it while i was doing it. and i have not picked it up since. and i think it's very difficult, you know, and it really annoys people who love you. (laughter) the guitar or the piano, it's kind of one thing to listen to somebody practice, but a trumpet, a wrong note is so painful. - kind of annoying. how well did you know chet baker's music? or how much do you enjoy either chet baker's music or jazz generally, are you a fan of this sort of musi
