[applause] >> thank you, judge simon. thank you, everyone. welcome, thank you for being here, justice kagan. it's an honor to have you here. we're really excited and we appreciate you taking the time to have this conversation with us. >> it's great to be here this whole conference and thank you to everybody and especially to the chief judge for making me feel so at home and forgiving me so much work to do during this. >> the lineup in that case were somewhat unusual given the recent divide on the court. i'm wondering from your perception what lessons can we learn from that case and from the lineup? >> well, truth be told, i do think that the lineups were less unusual than they just were lop sided. you know, the unusual lineup is usually like the 5-4, but everybody's all scrambled. but this was just a lop sided result. it was a 7-2 case, sometimes we have those. we have 7-2 cases. we have 8-1 cases. and in this case the outsiders, if you wi

earlier this year, there were questions raised about justice sonia sotomayor, apparently prodding schools and libraries where she spoke to buy her book. how does what justice thomas did compare with his colleagues? >> we have been actively pursuing all the credible leads and tips on all the justices. we continue to report on all of them. so far what we know now is that justice thomas is an extreme outlier. we brought the reporting to former federal judges, including those who sat on the judicial committee that reviews disclosures, and jeremy vogel told us that he has never seen anything like this before. thought it was unprecedented for both the volume and frequency of the largesse. these are not one-off vacations. this is consistent, steady stream of luxury vacations that justice thomas has received, a the other justices who you may have heard about, like justice breyer, justice ginsburg, accepting vacations from benefactors -- we know about those because they disclosed them, and that is the important distinction, that they were on the disclosures. we will continue to look at all of the
