i'm catherine heenan and we begin with that breaking news from sonoma county. a wind driven brush fire has now burned 1013 acres. this is in the area of stewarts point skaggs spring road near lake sonoma. at last word, cal fire telling us it's about 15% contained. earlier today, plumes of smoke could be seen for miles as this fire grew. the current evacuation orders at last word cover fall creek road to stewarts point skaggs spring road and evacuation warning also in place west of dry creek road. there is an evacuation center now it's laguna high school in forest hill. and tonight we're joined by cal fire spokesperson jason clay. jason, over the course of the day, i was telling people 300 and some acres, 50900. so now more than 1000 out. what's happening? what are the conditions? >> yeah, where you kind of mentioned at the start, there is really a wind-driven fire with low relative humidities. and so the led to the fire spread we threw a lot of resources that the fire both from the air and the but but this fire has grown into that where we got to just not now. w

and you can see sonoma county and then even over in napa county.napa county is actually the part of the north bay under that red flag warning our interior mountains and hills. so this is 02:00pm. we see breezy conditions once again and the conditions will be dry as well. once that day, time hitting kicks in, relative humidity. looks like it's dropping to the single digits around the north bay. that will concerned. something to look out for. you'll be starting the day off and the upper 40's and low 50's around the bay. a warming up to very similar temperatures that we saw today. so we're saying 60's by the coast, 70's around the bay little warm in the san francisco in the low 70's there. and then 80's, as you make your way inland. here is that 7 day outlook will be holding on to some. we're all very nice weather, breezy conditions, but come thursday inland for you. we're seeing 90's back in the forecast and that is the first day of summer. so it has been feeling like summer and now it's going to really be summer with some warm conditions coming our

crews have been working all night to gain control of the point fire, which is in sonoma county. has burned more than 1000 acres since it started yesterday. this is burning on the south side of lake sonoma, west of geyserville . there's a lot of concern this morning about the healdsburg area. it started along stewarts point, skaggs springs road and exploded to the east, burning toward healdsburg. firefighters spent hours defending vineyards and homes along dry creek road. containment is only up to 15. people across the bay area are noticing the smoke from the fire. satellite images showing you now the smoke plume spreading down into the east bay. and if you look at this video from an alaska airlines flight, you can actually see that thick layer of smoke. we're joined now by jason clay, who is the cal fire public information officer. good morning. jason, i know that you were hoping to get some better conditions overnight. it looks like that delivered. do we have any idea what the size of the fire is right now? >> yeah. so we did see favorable conditions overnight, and with that, we

so here's a look at the fire itself, in sonoma county, we have bradford mountain right here. there's lake sonoma. so if you're around that area, you know exactly where this is. and you can see how the fire, with the way the winds were yesterday, really rapidly took off from around lake sonoma and then pushed off towards the south and also the east. so right now it's just butted up right here against dry creek road. temperature of 86, humidity down to a very dry 17. we have northwest wind gusts here at 12mph. could get gusts up to about 25. tomorrow 87 winds out of the west at 13 and some winds up to about 25. so the way the winds blowing, i think into tomorrow, we would still see the fire trying to push towards dry creek road at this point. so hopefully we'll be able to keep those containment numbers with wind gusts only hitting at about 25. now we're still under a red flag fire warning here right through 8:00 tonight. this does include, lakeport, cobb, middletown, also mountains around napa, sonoma, saint helena and sonoma. we could get some isolated gusts, up to about 40 in

the so-called point fire started yesterday in northern sonoma county. it sparked in a rural area near lake sonoma near stewarts point scag spring road. whipping wind caused the flames to explode to over 1,000 acres in less than 24 hours. now this evening sonoma county declared a local state of emergency to allow for state and federal aid to flow in more quickly. at last check, this fire has burned at least two home, torched over 1,100 acres. firefighters have boosted containment up to 20%. fire crews say tomorrow they plan to keep bolstering containment lines and conduct mop-up operations to keep the flames from burning out of control. one firefighter is in the hospital after a helicopter crew pulled off a tricky nighttime rescue. they managed to pull him to safety despite flying in smoky and treacherous terrain earlier this morning. luckily the sonoma sheriff's department says the officer has non-life-threatening injuries and was not burned. more on the point fire and how it's impacting local communities later in the show, but right now we're tracking a

dangerously close to homes in sonoma county. >> good evening. i'm ryan yamamoto. >>> here's a look at the current evacuation map. evacuation orders in place in healdsburg and west of the city. you can see a small number of spot fires burning in the area. first alert chief meteorologist paul heggen is here tracking the dangerous conditions right now. >>> the red flag warning in effect for the north bay hills continues until 8:00 this evening. the wind has been the issue. we've got our wind particles turned on and it's not just the impact of the wind, it's the downstream effect as the wind carries the smoke across more of the bay area. that was more of an issue yesterday than today, but conditions are still challenging fire crews. it's not overly hot. the temperature is around 80 degrees, but humidity levels are in the 15 to 20% range which is too low. the winds are sustained around 10 miles an hour, they are gusting higher. in terms of the red flag conditions, we have the red flag warning in effect until 8:00. this is our fire weather tracker. th

fire burning in sonoma county that has sent wildfire smoke drifting across the north bay and contra costa county. wood burning is banned and people are urged to stay indoors and take public transit. chief meteorologist bill martin joins us now. and bill, you said earlier it could have been much worse with the winds, but they've laid down a little bit. yeah. >> and the other thing too, that could have been much worse. this could be october or september when fuel moistures are way down. right. these trees. and where this fire is burning now around the point area around cloverdale, healdsburg, the trees are holding a lot of fuel moisture. so it's a very different story. three months from now, you know all that. but so firefighters are doing a nice job on this fire. as you know, they've got some they've cut a bunch of lines today. they got good containment for not they're only 20% containment. but they did a heck of a job getting those fire lines cut last night up on the ridge lines. and they've they've really done a nice job isolating the fire. the temperatures are not all that hot or they'r

sonoma county declaring a local emergency yesterday. now, people in nearby healdsburg all too familiar, know this threat all too well. they are familiar with the smell of the wildfire smoke this time of year. of course, an orange hued skyline as well. very familiar because of this nearby point fire. it's been threatening homes under evacuation orders. you smell the smoke or you see the big plume. you you know, your nerves go up. it's definitely a stressful situation. kind of not so good. you know, you notice being light headed and stuff like that and not going out too much. cal fire has made good progress on this fire, stopping it from growing in size. it's remaining at just under 1200 acres now, more than 400 fire personnel are on scene to battle the flames. they were. so yesterday there was an evacuation order in place for people living in the area of dry creek valley, which is home to several private vineyards as well. now so far, two structures have burned, but cal fire says the point fire isn't actively threatening any others at th
