sony shares gained slightly in japan, up by .5%. the latest is the game correspondent for ing.com. we still don't have a release date for the xbox 1. has microsoft already lost the race when it goes up against sony? >> i would say if this was a boxing match, microsoft is on the ropes. we have expected on several occasions for them to come back, with a strong reply to what sony said in their press conferences and yesterdays with a disappointment. sony came out with a glitzy, confident presentation, talked about fantastic games and investment in indy developers, bringing new games and experiences to their console. they also gave the release date. on the other hand, microsoft gave very little. they would get a free game to download with their console if they preordered which possibly signals their preorders may not be as strong as sony's because sony came out and said they had over a million preorders. we had no figures or information like that from microsoft, yet they announced a game for people who preordered. >> how significant is i

for example, last year, sony was number one in market share.ast five years, sony has been between one and three, at the most five, in market share out of ten studios. and yet daniel loeb is evaluating sony on the basis of two tentpoles this summer. there's not a studio that doesn't have tent pole problems. for very good reason. tent poles are a very difficult model. and unless you own the marvel catalog or the d.c. catalog, putting together $250 million propositions that have to make their business basically an international territories, and you don't own the "avengers," those are very difficult business proposition to put together, and virtually every studio has had difficulties, as you've seen this year with disney and "lone ranger" and disney with "john carter," when they don't have the "avengers," disney has a hard time. universal last year with "battleship." the problem is how do you make tent poles. sony has the best track record for making original movies and making them for a price of any other studio. that's the point i made in my book

sony pictures most recently released "the smurfs 2." stocks on a hot streak: solid earnings gave a boost to stocks this week. michael kors is trading higher following this week's earnings report that revealed sales in north america are up 46%. cvs caremark also topped expectations. it says sales of new generic drugs helped profits. and molsen coors stock is buzzing. beer sales were up as the company's profits rose 165%. things are not so hot at american eagle. that stock took a tumble due to expectations of an earnings miss. the stock fell 12%, ending the day above $17. since we sometimes report on ceo's bringing home massive salaries, here's some info from cnn money on top executives earning a $1 a year - although there are often bonuses and perks involved. richard kinder of kinder morgan, along with google co-founders sergey brin and larry page, were all paid no more than $1 last year. on the list of ceos who report getting paid only $1 but are actually compensated much more handsomely: meg whitman at ebay. she took home more than $15

sony shares dropping 5% in trading because of the news that sony will not take up loeb's idea to haveipo of a fifth entertainment business. look at what clooney said about loeb. wow. he said, essentially, dan loeb, the hedge fund billionaire, knows nothing about the business, really blasting dan loeb saying there's no conscious at work. he's basically saying that the hedge fund industry gets bailouts calling loeb a carpet bagger, and that the hedge fund guys don't create jobs that we do. essentially, final point on the bailout, hedge fund invested in greece and the bailout there. also, you know, clooney's saying why are you blasting our industry, and when sony's done "sky fall" and "zero dark thirty," he said, listen, there's a bloated infrastructure, it as generous perks, high salary, sony flops "after earth," "white house down," and, you know what something? let me tell you something, the first two movies earned back less than half of the production costs. you know, less than -- i'm telling you, production costs are $280 million on those two movies alone, so where do we go from here

around us once mighty institutions are falling, meaning the camera that is recording the show is by sony, and sony was once the mightiest of electronics company of the world, and last year they lost 8.5 billion, and some people say they should shut down the electronics division. that happened in ten years, going from the top of the heap to a situation where people say openly they should pack it in. you know, this country, we talk about vietnam, there's never been an individual country as powerful as america was in 1964, and what happened over the next ten years in vietnam? we were hum led; -- humbled; right? there's the -- there is something, i think, profoundly humbling about what happens to giants, the goliaths, and there could be someone in position of great authority and power is more precarious position than i think most people realize. >> why do goliaths shoot themselves in the foot? >> well, many republicans. i -- well, many reasons. i explore a couple. they assume the strategies that made them great will keep them great, and that's not true. two is they underestimate just how use
