it's not just sony. sony is good at defenses. sony has invested in this.hey have seen attacks before. the rest of the u.s. corporations have the same vulnerabilities that sony does. we can't just look at the private sector. it's going to have to rearchitect. the government has to be involved in defending. then we will have the option of being more offensive. i think until we set up the defenses, being offensive is going to be very challenging. >> should we be engaging in cyber warfare ethically? >> well, i don't think there's an ethical issue here. i think as mike points out, there's a practical issue in terms of our own vulnerability. also recall, north korea is a nuclear state. it's very close to south korea and japan. those are considerations as well. you cannot let this go unanswered. in addition to the suggestion that the ambassador made about putting them on the terrorist list, back on the list, we ought to at least consider some kind of covert action that would make them pay a price. last thing is this, if they are using the chinese infrastructure a

in a statement tonight, sony said, sony pictures has been the victim of an unprecedented criminal assault against our employees, our customer, and our business. those who attacked us stole our intellectual property, private e-mails and sensitive and proprietary material and sought to destroy our spirit and our morale. all apparently to thwart the release of a movie they did not like. in response to the attack on sony picture, new regency announced tonight that that company will stop development of a film starring steve carrel that was supposed to be set in north korea. joining us from atlantic magazine corey bennett a cybersecurity reporter. cory, when we get into the issue of what's going on here in terms of this attack, the nsa is actually the government operation that's arming in this kind of case. one of their jobs is to protect american companies and protect us and american companies from a foreign invasion of this kind into one of these companies. and that's who's going to be deeply involved in getting at what happened here with the fbi doing the formal working of the investigation

>> it is viewed on the administration side in terms of what sony chose to do. the company is in a very bad place right now. justice department officials made clear throughout the course of the investigation sony has been very helpful and forthcoming. you heard the president last night in an interview with abc before sony pulled it saying americans should go to the movies. there is no indication that the threat of some type of terrorist attack was valid or real. they were wary of it. i think when it comes to negotiating with terrorists in this case, the administration's policies have been firm, don't do it. but sony is an independent company and can operate on their own grounds. >> was there an official white house response to the discussion? >> there was. this came up in the next day. the white house press secretary said to quote home, something that made everybody cringe. they weren't going to way in on the executives but the white house has been confronted with these issues. but they try and spin this as a way to say this wasn't a good idea and this is recogn
