i'm sonya heitshusen. .and i'm dan winters ... thanks for joining us. a high speed chase overnight resulted in shots fired by a des moines police a high speed chase overnight resulted in shots fired by a officer. it began like so many do, as a routine traffic stop. it was just before 2:30 this morning when police say the driver took off. they were pursuing this man, 25 year old austin allen. he was in a stolen car and wanted on felony warrants in kansas and west des moines. speeds reached around 80 miles an hour down southwest 14th. police say allen lost control and went off the road in the 19-hundred block of casady drive. when officer christopher brockert got out of his squad car to arrest him, allen is accused of driving right at him. that's when brockert fired three shots at the car.. 12:04:52 it was definitely a scary situation for him. he very easily could have died. the fact that he looks like it meets the standards of the law and our policy. his life was in danger and that's pretty clear cut 06 no one was hurt. police caught up with allen a shor

and i'm sonya heitshusen. thanks for joining us. today, the director of the state's medicaid program took questions from lawmakers... they want to know if things are lined up for the state's transition to privatized medicaid. stephanie moore has the story, first on thirteen.... with a two week deadline looming, state lawmakers questioned the state's medicaid and department of human services directors about if things are set for the transition... 'the overriding responsibility of the department is to assure that those three mcos create a network that is assessable and quality for our members.' iowa's medicaid program serves 560-thousand iowans. it was supposed to be managed by private companies, beginning at the start of the year... but the feds stepped in and delayed that switch saying the systems weren't ready at that point... today medicaid director mikki items the centers for medicare and medicaid services or c-d-c identified as necessary, in or order to be able to switch. 'its an easy bill to enforce and already aligns with the laws we have for cars so it just makes sense.' the iowa senate passed a bill this week that would require motorists to change lanes to pass a cyclist...it's legislation the iowa bicycle coalition is happy to see moving forward..... 'its already the law defined for vehicles it just makes it clearer for bicycles now that you would give them a full lane of passing when you pass a bicyclist on the road. 'i see a lot of close passing that really isnt necessary, it would take a driver seconds to wait for traffic to clear so they can change lanes and there are just so many that wont.'

and i'm sonya heitshusen. police were notified there were two men attempting to break into a home in the 600 block of park avenue... and officers happened to be in the area when the call came in.... that crime quickly shifted into a high speed chase when the two suspects took off.... stephanie moore has on 13. a homeowner in the 600 block of looking out her window just after midnight when she spotted two men approaching her home... 'somehow she became aware that these people were at her home, she saw the car she saw one of the suspects was armed.' des moines police say her quick thinking got officers, who were nearby, to the home quickly.... 'as the suspects were leaving they did not gain entry into her home as they were leaving the officer pulled in behind them, as soon as he turned on his lights and signaled for them to stop the driver took off and led the officers on a chase down park avenue.' police say the chase reached speeds of up to 70 miles per hour and stop sticks were deployed to slow the car down..
