it was both of the justices, sonya sotomayor and justice barrett, on this idea of perceived partisanshipn the court. here is a bit of that exchange. [video clip] >> they began to adopt our buzzwords as buzzwords some of the discussions we were having like plaintext and things like that. but instead of discussing those terms with respect to approaches that made sense and why, with all the nuances that those approaches contained, they just began to label people according to the buzzwords. and that does not do justice to the fact that -- justice barrett was just describing the cases we disagree, she should also be describing the cases that we do agree, of which there are many. >> many. >> and not just between her and me but between me and clarence thomas, me and neil gorsuch, me and all of them, including scalia. we have consented together on a number of cases. so the nuances of how we talk about legal theories is missing from the sort of fancy words that politicians have given to judges. >> for a lifetime, it does insulate us from politics, so it is not just that we are not obama judges or

the supreme court that have him recused with supporting factual documentation which would give sonya sotomayor opportunity to publish a written opinion. the court yesterday focused on a national rule. at the court just a clearing in this opinion that there is now a national rule that donald trump has been disqualified. in session this weekend, including super bowl sunday which is fine by me, to deal with this bill that now, as everyone knows, about ukraine, funding for ukraine. and its war effort, funding for israel, funding for taiwan and some other matters. i'll dispense with the israel and taiwan funding because that's a pretty shat forward one that i think -- straightforward one that i think has strong support. i'm for t. i'm also for helping ukraine against russia. i do believe we have a national interest in helping ukraine against russia. i would just summarize it this way. if you look at china, which most people would agree is the -- the u.s.' biggest adversary at this point for global influence. the chinese are hoping one of two things is going to happen. the first is they're hoping we

justice sotomayor: if i might share with the audience observation that justice souter gave me, he was my predecessor, i took his seat. he welcomed me and said sonya had an epiphany one day. and that was, i get very upset and angry as a dissenter because i couldn't convince my colleagues of my views. it drove me crazy. and he said at a certain point i realized, they are as passionate about the constitution, about our laws, about our democracy as i am. we are all people of good faith. we may disagree on what the best answer is for those values that it is never from bad faith. he said that eased his tension tremendously. i do think that's a problem i see in public exchanges i see on tv now. there's too much vilifying of people as human beings and not enough acceptance that we are fundamentally good people. you don't get involved in public service, you don't get involved in trying to help others unless you have a certain core values about love of family, love of friends, love of community. you have to believe in those things to become involved. if you believe in them and can accept those who differ from you in their thinking have those values as well
