sophie reaper inside. i've been messaging her because it's. who knows how harrowing it is to hear what's going on in that court. mark white we saw some of the videos, some of the pictures, very early on, they were leaking out. that's being shown in court today. heaven knows what those inside are being subjected to. mark white for those who are just joining us at 3:00 today, can you bring us fully up to speed? >> yes, indeed. well, axel rudakubana was brought to court today, just about 1030 this morning. he didn't attend the court initially. there was a delay. proceedings were expected to get underway at 11 am, but he was, it seems, refusing to go up into the dock. as you said in your summary. so well there, martin, claiming that he was ill, protesting that he needed medical attention. but he was eventually persuaded to go up to the dock. he wasn't in there seconds, and he was saying, mumbling at first that he was unwell. and then as the prosecutor started to set out the case against him, and especially the fact that he was heard in the custody

let's cross live to our north west reporter sophie reaper, who joins us from outside liverpool crown court. >> well, there's been an overwhelming sense of surprise here at liverpool crown court today following that change in plea. of course. axel rudakubana originally pleaded not guilty to those offences back in december of last year and that those offences back in december of last year anioniat those offences back in december of last year anion all 16 counts, pleaded guilty on all 16 counts, including three counts of murder. during that attack in southport last july. now that when acknowledging and speaking to axel rudakubana in court today, justice goose said you will understand that it is inevitable the sentence will be imposed upon you, will mean a life sentence equivalent will be imposed upon you. i will have to complete the sentencing sentencing process on that occasion. however, it's now believed that axel rudakubana will not be handed a whole life order at that sentencing, which is scheduled to take place here on thursday. and the reason for thatis on thursday. and the reason
