southeast asian countries face a difficult situation in the south china sea. the philippines decided to beef up its vessels in the area. work is under way to build a new facility to protect this tiny island, which is about 400 meters long and 30 meters wide. small islands like this are susceptible to waves and strong winds. the military personnel stationed there are cut off from their families. living in such an environment puts them under a lot of strain. >> if i see the pictures, it will be sad. that's why it is better if i don't have pictures with me. i read to keep my mind off them. >> on some island, civilians play an important role. the second largest among the islands. nine families a total of 53 people, live on the island. the philippine government asked them to live here. it pays them a monthly allowance of $130. an average salary in a provincial city on the mainland. it also provides them with free rides. residents keep livestock and grow farm produce. they are very aware of their role protecting the island. >> it would be very difficult for china to

today a south bay businessman plans to do the same thing. marla tellez joins us with that story. >> scott, good morning. so far we heard quite a bit from the 99%. not a lot of the 1% until now. this is a beverage distributor. he is the 1%. he's going to lead by example. 75-year-old mike fox sr. says he's leaving bank of america. essentially he's going to pull out all his company's money and the funds from his personal account from b ofa in a show of support from the occupy movement. we're not talking small potatoes. we're talking millions of dollars. fox is a prominent south bay businessman and well known philanthropist. they have about $8 million with bapg of america. he will yank that out. personally he's transferring several hundred thousands dollars of his own money. he tells mercury news he's not sure where he's going to put his money but it could land in a local bank. his decision comes just before what is being dubbed bank transfer today. tomorrow activists are urging everyone nationwide to move their money from the big guys to the li
