our trade deficit with south korea has increased by more than $11 billion. not exactly a great deal. i was gratified to learn about the new investment south korean companies are making in the united states. this month, the first shipment of american liquefied natural gas to south korea in a deal worth more than $25 billion. it's great. we will do more to remove barriers to reciprocal trade and market access. we talked last night and today about some tough trade issues. like autos and steel. i'm encouraged by president moon's assurances that he will work to create a level playing field so that american workers and businesses, and especially automakers, can have a fair shake at dealing with south korea. south korean companies sell cars in america, american companies should have that same exact privilege on a reciprocal basis. and i'm sure we'll be able to work that out. in addition, i have called on south korea to stop enabling the export of dumped steel. these would be important steps forward in our trading relationship. in america, american companies very im

south korea does a lot.y contribute more to their own defense than just about any other american ally in the role with the united states. they have been under threat for a long time and have not been averse to spending a lot of money and maintain a large military force. if you look at the -- that is one of the risk factors. highly a very, very weapons-intensive and manpower -intensive location on a very small peninsula, so we have worked with our allies in south korea for a very long time. andollaborate militarily maintain a presence of almost 30,000 military personnel on the peninsula, but south korea is the one that bears the brunt of the defense relationship. they are increasingly more the ones who are more forward deployed, because it is after all the korean peninsula, and we believe, and i believe the south koreans even amidst their political differences, recognized that they need to protect themselves, that they need help to do that, and that is what the united states has done ever since it intervened
