in the south bay it could be a few thousand dollars according to a new study. nbc in the bay's ian cole joins us. >> i get that energy from you because you have been so busy today. you've been speaking with researchers, advocates. you've been looking at the studies. what does it show? >> the study found it's a cost effective way of taxpayer dollars. two notre dame professors has one program run by destination homes. it gives money to families behind on rent or utility bills and about to become homeless. sometimes it's just $2,000. it found those who received one-time emergency financial assistance are 73% less likely to become homeless within a year. i spoke with a professor david phillips who is part of notre dame's lab for economic opportunity. >> prevention programs have often been criticized in the past as not being cost effective. the concern about them is it's hard to know who is exactly homeless. we do find there are enough people who would have ended up in a true crisis situation that paying a month or two of rent be for them is the thing that's the diff

more 80's in the south bay. really pleasant around the bay itself with 60's and 70's. then things are going to change a little bit. i wanted to use my lottery forecast because i know we've got a lot of future galion air is out there. we may even have some in our own office here at kron. 4 will see what happens. but temperatures are going to roll up. we look at concord is an example to about 101. on your sunday. so that could be the hottest day. but frankly, saturday and monday, also hot. so we'll get back to kind of normal as we head into next week. then i wanted to look ahead at the country for the next week, right? we're going now from august 10th to 14th and you can see how staying cool south staying warm. we're going to be just a little bit above normal. so we're going to go from hot to kind of normal and then maybe a little bit above normal, according to these long-term prediction. so just to give you a sense of where we're at for august, so there is the heat saturday sunday and monday. so make your plans accordingly for your weekend. make sure outside of the hott

already closer to the weekend, we started out at 60, south bay at 62 with some smog even in san francisco at 60 and for the north bay at 61. because of the developing system off to the north, it will actually begin to cool off so not as hot tomorrow, still a warm day, 90 in concord, 80 in santa rosa, san francisco in the 70s and half moon bay at 65. everything changes by friday because of this system. drops down with substantially cooler air. 20+ degrees colder for parts of the bay area. when it comes to the rain, we see the best possibility to the north and east and we could get into spotty showers by friday night, especially near the north bay, east bay and south bay and we hold onto spotty shower chances early afternoon. the highest rainfall totals through the sacramento valley especially for the suburbs in sacramento off toward the east, roseville, auburn and placerville, a half inch or more to the north of us. in the blue color just some trace amounts, a chance for spotty showers friday and saturday with 60s returning in san francisco. 90 tomorrow, 70s coming in friday and saturday.

let's move to the south bay, with a look at our temperatures. east san jose reaching 87 degrees, and we'll see a high of 85 in los gatos. for much of the east bay it's in the mid to upper 80s, some mid-70s for hayward. redwood city, expect to make it up to 80 today. very much like we've seen the past few days. half moon bay, 62 degrees, and 63 in the ingleside district. for the north bay, 69 in mill valley to 80 in santa rosa, and 91 in clear lake. so the farther you go inland, the hotter those temperatures will be. let's take a look at a spot like fairfield and what's expected the next ten days. it's nice and mild today, with a breezy wind, but it's going to start to get hotter this weekend, as high pressure returns and shifts the wind direction. we'll see some upper 90s in the forecast on tuesday, so we are bracing for some higher heat to come our way. as we take a look at our seven-day forecast, our temperatures go from mid-80s to upper 80s and then mid-90s. we stay there for a while. it's going to be hot throughout much of next week. we're no
