in the section called mont haven that was then and today the single poorest neighborhood of all south bronx which remains the poorest congressional district of all 235 districts in america. i thought i had seen poverty but i have seen nothing of the scale of four. readers ask me what have been to those children? did you keep in touch with them? how many survived? how many did not? and for those who did, how did they obtained the decent education? how far did it take them? where they doing now? some i am sad to say never did recover from the battering they underwent with the schools 10 or two exceptions the worst i have seen anywhere in the united states. they and the streets where the needle drugs and crack cocaine almost everywhere. three of the voices that suffered the most are no longer a live. one of them by a new him when he was eight years old. he finally killed himself with a bullet to his brain in a moment of despair. another killed himself intentionally with inherit -- overdose of heroin. another died by surfing on a subway train. riding on the tops under the tunnels of york his fr

as margaret said, in 1949 we came to the south bronx, which was an irish neighborhood, mostly. i was sort of a spaced-out kid, destined obviously to be a poet. i was this big at 13 and i was a good rollerskater and the kids were amazed and they befriended me. after a while, they recognized that i had some sort of athletic ability and because i was so spaced out, they mistook it for great courage and if they pushed me, i pushed them back. it was just like a game. so they took to me and asked me to join the shamrocks. i even changed my name from ed vega to ed mcveigh. and this is how they passed me off because most of the teams they played were other irish kids. this was a regular football team so, consequently, they listed me as eddie mcveigh. it was great fun and my friends were jimmy flynn, paddy o'connor. my siblings married the shenny's and i almost married a catherine finerin but it didn't work out. i have a nephew, sean patrick mcflynn. i always question myself because my writing about the irish is really my writing about myself coming to the united states and coming into

my dad, may he rest this peace, was a plummer in the south bronx -- plumber in the south bronx. was the first generation born in america. mario, technically, was the second generation. his grandfather died in the coal mine in late 19 -- 1890s, i believe, and his dad went back to italy but was born in america. but mario's equally a success and deserves all his success. but i think in describing my trip from the south bronx to here, it should be an inspiration to all of you because i say this with great sincerity that with an average iq, a strong work ethic and a heavy dose of good luck, you can go very far. i started my journey going to public schools, 75 in the south bronx. i then went to morris high school in the south bronx, and then i graduated west bonk bronx, i went to hunter college city university of new york, now called lehman college. i spent four very happy years there. i met my wife of 48 years in our french class our sophomore year, and given my skills at language, i would probably still with at hunter if it wasn't for my wife helping me in french. after this present

south berry subway station here. you get off the staten island ferry and some would walk through here and take the train uptown or as far as the bronxu so choose. the problem is there's 30 to 40 feet of what we call brackish water had in there, which is kind of a mixture of fresh water and seawater and diesel fuel. i was down there earlier, we took some picks down there, and i'm telling you, after about 30 or 40 seconds your eyes are burning, your nostrils are burning. you can't breathe down there. it is awful. so the army corps of engineers is here and hoping to pump this out and it's going to take a couple days. i mean 30 to 40 feet deep and it goes all the way up to the next station. all right. this is the worst station that we understand here in lower part of manhattan in terms of water infiltration. we talked about the tunnels that are still infiltrated, midtown, battery and holland, creating traffic snarls around. people are making it around but the bridges are going to clog up in a situation like this. on a positive note the metro north, long island railroad will be on-line at 2:00 this afternoon and we expect limited service
