[laughter] but anyway, well, you know, everybody doesn't have ancestors before the revolution. but why did south carolina secede? you know, a lot of our southern friends, particularly sons of confederate veterans and heritage crowd who i love and i love reenactors, and they're great people, really want secession to be about something other than what it was about. and so this is a debate, you know, that's pretty hot and heavy. um, and that really wasn't about slavery, it was really about states' rights, and you've heard all that. it really was about slavery, it really was about race, and it really was about the racial caste system that every white southerner had a stake in. and the thing i find somewhat -- i can't understand about this a

. >> on a recent visit to charleston, south carolina, booktv took a look at the charleston library society. >> oldest circulating library in the united states, and the oldest cultural institution of any kind in the south. it was originally founded by 19 young men here in charleston as a way to get books and publications shipped from london. they collected together, pooled their resources. it became one of the most important cultural institutions in town very quickly. um, it helped found the college of charleston, it directly founded the charleston museum which is america's first museum. it became a center for learning. there are many early natural historians, bachmann, audubon set up camp here in charleston, and the library society was kind of their home base. so it was an early center for science and learning in the colony. most of the founding fathers from south carolina, signers of the constitution, signers of the declaration of independence were all library society members on our board, very active members, plenty of them. we have lots of their letters and papers in our collection toda

the charleston institution of the south carolina institution. there are some great documents. this is the or original manuscript copy. we are open to conservation donations. this is the original manuscript of his view of carolina. john drake was one of the first governors in the early republican period much the same as thomas jefferson's notes on virginia. he drove all around south carolina by carriage surveying everything taking useful social statistics to come up with a scientific and geographic view of what south carolina really was. in a lot of ways he was fundamental to found in south carolina and a lot of this would be an argument that south carolina and needed a centralized capital. he would be one of the founders of columbia. this manuscript was his foundational document. there are mixed conditions. a whole handful of maps in here. there is his map of charleston which would have been 1802. this book is a survey of what the state of south carolina is and moving its capital. for a little bit of our 20th century collection the charleston renaissance of the 1920s which prod

traveling first to florida, then came back up the coast to south carolina when law enforcement heat got too heavy in south florida. in south carolina they found a smugglers' paradise. there's mile after mile of marsh with tons of inlets and rivers for them to bring in books packed full of pot. they rarely got caught, and it wasn't until the early 1980s when the federal investigation was launched to try and find these men. the government wasn't sure who was smuggling, they just knew someone was and that someone was making a lot of money, so they started a financial operation called operation jackpot tracking down real estate purchases and luxury car purchases to find out who these smugglers were. eventually, they caught and convicted more than 100 marijuana smugglers tracking some of them down this manhunts that stretched from australia to california. i spent a lot of time talking about two kingpins, barry and les. both moved to south florida in the early '70s but came back to south carolina to begin their kingpin years. they were wild, crazy, they decided to take boats to jamaica, colom
