south carolina is another one of those early voting states. it's going to come right after iowa and new hampshire. it's also a very prominent conservative state in the tea party movement. the governor of this state, nikki hailey came out and talked to reporters after her speech this morning and called this move by the perry campaign to make this announcement today a brilliant stroke. so the perry people are already getting the attention of big-name republicans out there trying to figure out who they're going to endorse. haley says she hasn't made up her mind yet. but rick perry is going to be fighting very hard for this nomination. south carolina figures very prominently in his campaign strategy. he may not able to win iowa. that's michele bachmann's home state, as she tooix likes to say time and again. he may not win new hampshire because that is a state next door to mitt romney's massachusetts. so south carolina is very important to the perry candidacy. >> i wonder, how does he stack up in the polls comparatively to all the names you just me

nikki haley, she's the governor of south carolina. and t.j., this is a name you're going to be hearing over the coming months as well as a possible vice presidential contender. so even though there's a lot of action in ames, iowa, right now, the conservatives like who they're seeing in south carolina this weekend. they see some of the people who are going to be here in south carolina this weekend as perhaps the future stars of this republican party. first and foremost, rick perry, who a lot of conservatives, a lot of tea party activists right now, are pretty fired up about. they think he could give mitt romney a serious run for his money. t.j.? >> all right. jim acosta in charleston, south carolina, thank you. and you heard him mention iowa. that is where a lot of activity is happening. rick perry is not on the ballot for today's straw poll there in iowa where the party's kind of going on, but there are nine others who are vying for a win there in this nonbinding vote. you don't actually get anything for it, but you do get attention,

south carolina was saved when boeing decided to expand or put operations in south carolina. they created a thousand new jobs in charleston. it was the highlight that we needed. we were so excited. it with a shot in the arm that let us know we were going in the right direction. when they created 1,000 jobs in south carolina they expanded their operations in washington state by 2,000 jobs. not one person was hurt and the nlrb sued boeing and said they had no right to do that. that is the most americans think i have ever heard of and we cannot have that. all eyes are on charleston, south carolina, this hour. governor rick perry is at the red state convention there, a conservative gathering where he is expected to make the formal announcement that he is running for president in 2012. perry's web page already says that he is a candidate. he is expected to take the stage any minute now. we'll bring that to you live as he speaks. so just who is governor rick perry? here's a quick biographical look to get you a bit more informed of him. he's a republican and the 47th governor of texas. he's a graduate of texas a & m, the first aggie to become former. he's signed budgets to reduce the general revenue spending in texas. on education, he introduced the largest teacher incentive pay program in the country. and on immigration, governor perry initiated a boots on the ground strategy. it coordinates local, state, county and federal law enforcement efforts. rick perry is a conservative who is against abortion and same-sex marriage. cnn political correspondent jim acosta joins us now from charleston. w

we continue with former south carolina governor mark sanford.here was -- your wife wrote this book. for example, she knew about this relationship you were having with this woman for a long time. for a couple of months. she was asked in an interview if there were any signs? one of the things she said before were you married you wanted to take out the word faithful. that struck me. you are a pretty christian guy. why would you want to take out the word "faithful" in the vows? >> there are certain things i'm not going into on this interview because i think it would bring harm to jenny or the boys and that would be one of them. let's define it as a mistake and leave it at that. >> sean: my question is did you have doubts in your heart about your ability -- i'm only asking -- i'm not trying to be salacious. i'm asking you because maybe deep down inside i wondered, if had you doubts about your ability, way back when, that maybe you thought this was a mistake. maybe you didn't think you had the ability to be faithful. >> none of which is constructive o

speaking at the red state convention center there in south carolina. he's a guy who, frankly, is very successful on paper, at least on the jobs front. a quarter of -- as many as 30% to 50% of jobs in the country were actually created in texas. the question is, what kind of jobs? and at what cost? texas ranks 47th in the country in state spending on schools. they're the highest in the country for the levels of toxic chemicals released into the environment, and can someone like him, the key question is, with such strong conservative rhetoric and conservative credentials, appeal to the broader american voter, particularly all the independents out there a republican will need to beat barack obama. let's bring in richard and brent. richard, what did you hear in candidate perry? >> i bet i wasn't the only person in your audience, chris, who at some point closed his or her eyes and thought if you just change the accent and the twang a little bit, this is george bush 2000. i mean, he's doubling down. he talked about balancing the budget. bush couldn't talk abo

south carolina is going to be very significant state for republican candidates. and that's not saying for sure that he's writing off iowa. there's a lot of time between now and january when the iowa caucuses actually happen. >> how right you are. >> kelly: and i want to get to you before we run out of time here because we know when you're talking about iowa and the fact there might be animosity there among the iowan electorate. we understand na rick perry will be in iowa tomorrow and possibly spend three days there, what's he going to do, mend fences? >> he might have to eat a lot of potatoes, you know, talk about how much he loves iowa so he'll be doing a lot of that for sure. he didn't get to eat the butter on the stick, but i think he's going to be meeting iowans and trying to put a little sal of on whatevsalve on wound of whatever he did today. and different strategies for different campaigns, might be that he doesn't need iowa to win, he might need in that case, south carolina. so there's a long time between now and january when the iowa caucuses happen and

let's talk about south carolina first.ick perry joining the race with a lot of strength and passion and making the pitch. the economic pitch against president obama's record in the white house. >> no doubt about it. rick perry for what some of his detractors may say about him, and i've been a detractor from time to time. rick perry takes care of a lot -- he checks a lot of boxes for republican primary voters. here's a guy who obviously is a social conservative. so you can check that box off. and you can draw a lot from michele bachmann voters in the coming months. but also an economic conservative. he will tell anybody that listens to him for more than 30 seconds on the campaign trail that texas has a remarkable record when it comes to creating jobs. so he is going to be a very effective campaigner and a large presence in the republican primary. i guess my bigger questions about rick perry really have to do with how he would do in a general election. but right now, that's not the issue, and that's not the challenge for him

then it goes from there to south carolina. we have a great support group in south carolina henry mcmaster as one of our leaders and state, former attorney general, one of the more respected -- respected people in politics. i think the momentum coming out of new hampshire going into south carolina is such that we are going to do well. i think that momentum will be real. i think the connection with south carolina on the issues that matter most, things like economic revitalization and keeping it going plan will be critically important and the future of south carolina they are issues that we are all about. then onto florida, which is where i think the republican nomination will be decided. my wife is from florida. she is from orlando. we have our national campaign headquarters in orlando, the first time in history that a republican presidential canada has headquartered in florida. the people of florida know we're taking this very seriously. i believe that is where the nomination is going to be wrapped up. >> let me conclude with t
