ben tillman was the biggest men in south carolina politics at the turn-of-the-century and an infamous kind of demagogue of the jim crow south. he was the biggest man in south carolina and thurmond's father was kind of a lieutenant in its operation. thurmond's father had been elected as kind of a county prosecuting attorney and he was a successful -- he was on the rise when he got into a dispute one afternoon with a man. the man picked a fight with thurmond saying that he had, he was complaining about the position his father had not been appointed to. the man was drunk and he was very -- he cursed thurmond and all that kind of stuff and they got into a row. thurmond walked back to his law office in the man came back around. thurmond ended up shooting the man and he was acquitted for self-defense but the county's's biggest law enforcement official, doesn't help if you are on trial for murder. that is not good. infect thurmond would run for the house of representatives a couple of years later and he ended up finishing in the district 3. he would never run for electoral politics again but

it should be off the coast of south carolina. it will not evolve off the south carolina coast. she parallels north and south carolina pretty well be she does make a turn. and then right now still forecast to make a left turn into the delmarva and into pennsylvania. this is not a good track for us. it's not the worst case scenario but it's pretty close. 60 miles an hour winds with the storm itself and that is 2:00 p.m. on tuesday. monday night and tuesday the time frame hasn't change. let's talkn't the wind field. look how big the wind field is. it's 300-miles in diameter. so by 8:00 a.m. on sunday there will be tropical storm forced winds across eastern north carolina, haters are, outer banks and out intoner foaling and into del mar. by monday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. the winds that are stronger over 58 miles an hour are still just offshore with the tropical storm forced wind back inland to i-95. problem is at 3:00 p.m. on monday the storm hasn't made a left turn. eventually this big bulls eye of winds will move ashore. because it's so big, doesn't really matter in terms of a 50-

sections of georgia -- coastal sections of georgia and part of south carolina. this harms the florida coast and then -- parallels the florida coast and then turns back to the east. the showers we get saturday and sunday have nothing to do with sandy. then it turns back to the northwest. we talked about this possibility yesterday and on tuesday and this would impact the immediate metro area. this would not be a direct hit for us, but it would impact this as we get into tuesday morning and tuesday afternoon. even by tuesday afternoon this still has 65 mile-per-hour winds. it won't technically be a tropical storm anymore. it will be extra tropical, a cold core storm, but because it will be so intense it will generate some pretty big winds for us if it goes into northern new jersey. if it goes further north, less. so if it goes into southeast p.a., we'll be in a world of hurt. we'll come back and talk more about the timetable and scenarios. >> we should note for you sandy is already blamed for two deaths, one in haiti, the other in jamaica. the outer bands of the hu

the majority of the lighter rain is what's affecting the coastline of south carolina and north carolina and eventually will move up into virginia. these are current wind gusts, gusting up to around 30, 35 miles per hour. think how far away the storm is and winds are still that strong. as this moves onshore from east to west, believe it or not, that's when we'll see our strongest winds. we've got a stalled front to our west, a huge area of high pressure to our northeast. this storm has nowhere to go but west. it sounds so bizarre. that's what makes this storm so unusual. the way it's moving in to the delmarva area and into the mid-atlantic. we are going to see this storm affect somewhere in new jersey down through delaware into maryland. we'll end up with about eight to ten or more inches of rain. we are not just looking at inland flooding, but coastal flooding because of a four to five foot storm surge. power outages will be the biggest issue with wind gusts up to 80 miles per hour with the leaves on the trees. those will come down on power lines. we could be talking about power outages
