ofn i took office in january 2011, south carolina was struggling. like many other states, the great recession was hanging over us like a dark cloud. jobs were scarce, economic anxiety were real. the american dream felt out of reach for way too many. our state government was in stables. we had short-term deficits and long-term debt. our public schools were failing to many of our students. faith in our system had bottomed out. it was dawning the collection of challenges we faced. i remember not knowing quite where to start. then i came across a quotation from one of my favorite predecessors, governor carroll campbell who used to say that if you can find a person a job, you can take care of a family. i have always believed in controlling what i can control, and while governors do not create jobs, there is a lot we can do, and that starts with taking care of the businesses we already have. we got to work. cut business taxes, we passed tort reform which cap dams is on lawsuits. we invested in infrastructure without raising taxes. we stripped all of our r

south. a lot of people feel that georgia maybe and north carolina by 2020 or 2024. we're seeing the deep south start to suddenly go ever so purple and north carolina may tell the tale this year. north carolina, not crucial to fact wins florida. >> which doesn't mean it's not the checkmate state. you know where it's happening, it's happening in and around charlotte. it's happening in and around the raleigh durham area where you have all of those universities and clean tech industry. and the people who would populate that from the northeast, from the pacific northwest, all moving in this traditionally very, very red of north carolina are still very red. but the cities in north carolina are changing and has been changing. >> that's right. you have to look at mecklenburg county, charlotte's the seat there. obama took 100,000 votes out of mecklenburg county in 2012. with the concerns that hillary's campaign has had with early vote in north carolina, be interesting to keep an eye on those two counties to whether hillary is falling short. >> republicans have said from the b

>> one of the things we've been trying to do in south carolina, we started the south carolina democrats care. just as you said, we only have one member of congress. we don't control the governorship, we don't have any control of the legislative bodies. and so our idea is to go back into those communities, seeing what the needs are, listening to the people, letting them know that they matter and they're important, and we go into those communities to address some of their needs. so some of my county parties, sumpter county is one of them. they put on a school supplies drive, and they go every august to make sure that poor families who can't afford the clothes or the school supplies for their kids, that those things are provided. and they also work with the teachers who need reams of paper all throughout the year who have to pay for it out of their own pockets. when we do that, when we're able to do those type of things, put on housing workshops or helping people write their resumes, that's when people say oh, my god, the democratic party has helped me do a, b, and c. we spend millions and
