i was named south dakota's outstanding young farmer within a few years after dad passed and then south dakota's outstanding young leader and that that time our us senator was tom dashel. he was the majority leader in the house in the senate and was from south dakota and i was at a lot of his meetings. he ended up appointing me to a board that oversaw all the federal farm programs in the state. so i was involved in policy and and showing up with different people and people started to ask me to consider running for the state legislature, you know, it was interesting because asking my family they just thought well that's strange and you know, nobody's done that before but in our state this the legislature meets for 40 days a year you go in in january you balance the budget past bills and then go back home and back to your jobs and it wasn't that big of a commitment to outside of session and we figured we would try it and if it worked then everything would be okay. i did that got elected and ran for leadership right away and served as the assistant majority leader in the house, but that's

that's not our story here in south dakota. and i think every governor, every state will make very different decision on what their laws look like. >> on that note, if republicans take back congress in washington, would you support a national ban on abortion? >> you know, we'll see what congress does and what those discussions are. i've never, dana, operated in hypotheticals. i've told people what my values are, how i would lead and i would follow through on that. that's something i've always done running for elected office. you represent your people but you also represent the person that the values you hold and how you see your job as governor. we saw that during covid. we saw that with all the decisions that were made in different states as far as impacting people's families and their businesses. south dakota made very different decisions than every other state. i trust the people. i trust the constitution. i hate the energy policy this administration is bringing in harming our families. i hate the food insecurity they're cre

we already have patients who have come to us from minnesota and south dakota always over the the last but you've got state legislatures, you know, north dakota has a legislature where they have a super majority of conservatives, and so as we've seen the supreme court has turned this back to states, and it's going to be legal wrangling, and it's going to create more confusion for these patients and even for providers. we've heard from other physicians in north dakota asking what does the ruling mean for them, how do they care for patients, and we had a patient who was past our gestational limit recently, and we were scrambling to find her a place where she could receive abortion care and she expressed the same concern. will i be okay? will someone be tracking me. it's frustrating, and i think with this patchwork right now, there's so much just kind of unknown for everybody that even though things seem to be happening, it doesn't seem like it's reality for the patients on the ground. >> can i ask you, you know, you mentioned minnesota and its role compared to north dakota or neighboring

here in south dakota people are doing great. with that record income increases the last three years, in fact the highest in the nation. our record-setting revenues that are coming in, our economy is booming, but that's just not the story across the country, and with biden attacking our very way of life, it's going to be a full-time job for everybody to try to protect our way of life. >> sean: i'm looking at every big city, and most cities that have been run by liberal democrats, most states, deep blue, run by liberal democrats for decades, and you see from 2020 to 2021, and now continuing into 2022. record murder, crime, larceny, you name it, and it seems like the chaos is being won over. you know, defunding, dismantling, no bail, it's not worked out well for the cities. where's the person on the democratic side that says you know what, maybe it sounded good on paper, but it's not working out in reality and innocent people are getting hurt and we need to protect the people in our state and our city and our town? >> yeah, they ar
