early in person voting is underway in virginia, south dakota and minnesota. ballots cast, with just over six weeks left before election day and a dozen more states will start early and person voting by the end of october. 47 states plus the district of columbia are offering early in person voting. we were outside of a polling location in virginia. reporter: election day is still more than six weeks away but there has been a steady line of people all day here in fairfax, virginia lining up to cast their ballot. it is one of the first early in person voting stations to open ahead of the election. it is something that people in virginia will be able to do from now until election day itself. i spoke with a couple of people in the line to ask why they had decided to vote so early. for some that had t-shirts and merchandise, it is because they had already made up their mind and they did not think their vote would change between now and the election day. for others it was a case of practicality. that they would be on holiday during the time and didn't want to risk n

there was a long line of people waiting to vote in person in virginia today in minnesota and south dakota, voters can now begin filling out absentee ballots. in california, ballots will be sent out on october 7th and ballot drop offs will open the next day. another east bay leader is backing a tough on crime proposition that appear on the november ballot. today antioch mayor lamar hernandez thorpe announced his support for prop 36. the ballot measure would increase punishments for retail theft and drug crimes. it would also create a new category called treatment mandated felonies. people would undergo drug treatment instead of going to prison. several local leaders have already voiced their support for the measure, including san jose mayor matt mahan and san francisco mayor london breed. mayor hernandez thorpe says the measure will help reduce crime. there is a reality that we're grappling with and that is people are stealing. there is no accountability for it and we need to start taking action and that's that. governor newsom has been outspoken against prop 36. he says the measure would
