one thing that i think is really powerful about learning about south east asia and american history is, it reminds us that asian americans are not a monolithic minority. there are a variety of different backgrounds, experiences that shaped their migration to the u.s. in the ways that they are able to thrive in the united states. what is amazing to see is how much upward mobility has been accomplished by a lot of these refugees within the span of a generation. i once interviewed a meng woman of how she gave birth by the side of a river. she could not swim across that river because she had just given birth and the baby whistle small. but as soon as she was able, she did, and her husband carried one child on his shoulder, and she carried the newborn baby. they swam across the river as troops were shooting at them. i asked after she told the story, what happened to that maybe that you carry? she said oh, she is a law student at uc berkeley now. i think it is really powerful to remember how much struggle some of these asian refugees have experienced due to war, due to upheaval, dislocation,
