matt gutman is on the south florida coast where they're moving forward but with great caution tonightmatt? >> reporter: hey, david, that barge is carrying thousands of live shells of fireworks, 27 minutes wort of rockets red glare. last year nearly 100 million people watched fair works across the country. but this year because of fire and drought, many americans will miss that most hallowed of american fourth of july traditions. a tradition that we found goes back to the very beginning, john adams wrote to his wife in 1776 that the day should be celebrated with quote, bonnfires and illumination across the country. cancelled in cities lik austin and san antonio and fire-scorched texas, fireworks displays scrapped from arizona to alabama, even at mt. rushmore in south dakota. like much of the country, tinder dry. in new mexico, the dry conditions are a challenge to firefighters battling the blaze at los alamos, today the biggest in state history. still less than 20% contained. but one bit of good news, evacuation orders have been lifted in the los alamos lab is set to reopen wednesday.
