we were on south florissant. the riot police were lined up. ere armored vehicles, automatic weapons. they were really taking on the protesters. but when we went to west florissant where the buildings are, the businesses -- namely there wasbusinesses, no national guard inside. when we were here months ago, when we were here months ago on west florissant, you cannot even make a turn there. they completely sealed off the area. but last night, to our shock, we drove unimpeded right down west florissant. people were breaking windows. they were setting the buildings on fire. this is black ferguson that was left by the national guard, is that right? >> yes. i was there for some two hours and witnessed first-hand the lack of response by the fire department, the casual nature in which the way the police engaged. they eventually shot tear gas. but what we are seeing now is this was a primary example of the racial divide in ferguson, in st. louis, and the nation. because this story has always been about mike around and bigger than michael brown. every oth

i just drove down south florissant next to the ferguson police department. there's a whole row of restaurants and stores, that have had their windows smashed in. it's a line of people putting up plywood boards. i spoke to a beauty operator saying she didn't put up boards. they thought it would provoke peek. unfortunately, her front store is smashed in and people looted a lot of the products in there. the other feeling is -- there's a sense of frustration with the process as it played out last night. i just spoke to a woman in starbucks saying, it appeared like the prosecutor mccullough was acting as darren wilson's defense attorney rather than looking out for the interest of michael brown and his family. it's kind of those two themes running through it this morning. >> what about the decision to have the announcement so late at night, 8:00 central time/9:00 eastern time? business owners that you're talking about, whether or not they decided to board up, did they have any comments or have people in the community had any comments just about the way the announc

south florissant is where the police department is. west florissant is where the initial protests happened back in august. this blowing up again there. a community that has been devastated once and now dealing with it again. i do want to talk to you about the mayor. we sat down and talked with him yesterday and we had a nice long conversation about what he's going to do in this town and about his concerns about how this was handled by authorities. here's what he had to say. >> i was assured and our community was assured that if it was getting out of control, if the national guard was needed, at that point they're beyond antagonizing, the destruction is under way, there's no reason not to deploy them. i have no idea why they were not deployed. that's frustrating. >> reporter: so there you go. i mean he put some of the blame on the way and the lag time in the response from the national guard, but if you take a look at the destruction, i mean he did talk to me about who is ultimately to blame and that is the people that decided to go out

it is pretty bad in some parts but mostly just two streets, west florissant and south florissant.e rest of ferguson is operating in some ways as normal but the whole town has been on edge and on hold as it tries to go further and tries to basically try to rebuild. brianna. >> there is, sarah, i've been told one uplifting story in all this. tell us about it? >> there's a couple, actually. we learned of a couple of businesses who got their windows broken, had some problems with folks who were just simply being criminals out here, and they are staying in the community and they are rebuilding and reopening. one of those is krathsy's kitchen. that family the jenkins family, opened that business because they had already retired from many, many years of work, but kathy, who is the namesake of the restaurant always wanted to open a restaurant and her husband helped her open it. he's a basketball coach for a lot of the young men, african-american young men, in this community, and they reopened the day after all this happened. there were protesters that stood outside of their business and s

some marchers and demonstrators started marching on south florissant, and that's when you saw police cruiser overturned, another police vehicle set on fire as well. that is when we saw the flares come out and then the tear gas. it was interesting this morning, one of the -- one of the local politicians, they were very upset that police had not done more to protected business. so, you've got this very interesting juxtaposition here. on the one hand, you have folks upset police didn't do more and then, fof course, you know, in the wake of michael brown's shooting, there were a lot of folks who were livid the police did so much. one thing we expect the mayor to talk about here in a few moments when the news conference starts, we expect him to address another criticism that's been leveled. the national guard was called up, you know, about a week ago, i believe. you did not see a lot of national guard troops last night. and governor mixon has called up even more national guard troops. so, i think we're expecting to hear the mayor talk about exactly where those national guard troops last n

there was a convoy of armoured personnel carriers in the street, in the middle of the road on south florissant road. they have gone. they pulled out. remember me telling you there was a convoy of police vehicles coming down the road, they appeared to stop, and we didn't know why. looks like they may have come to escort the vehicles away from here. i think the only conclusion that you can come to is they've gone to where robert ray is, where the violence sounds particularly bad with constant gunshot. as robert has been reporting, at least four buildings on fire. now, here, what you are looking at, this is the outside of the fire headquarters, the police headquarters is just adjacent to that building that you are looking at. in front of the fire station, those are the riot police. must be 30, 35, maybe 40 of them. protesters are gathered in a car park on the other side of the street. they were told to go on to the sidewalk, they'd be safe, they would not be allowed to be in the road. and that is what happened. there's a very vocal but peaceful demonstration. earlier here there was gun fire - we

the crowd moved north here on south florissant. it moves north haply -- roughly a half mile.ou are looking at a picture of where we are told the bulk of that crowd went. its city hall. it appears as if at some point some folks toppled over a car and threw a molotov cocktail inside that car. that car was on fire at one point. a crowd of folks surrounding -- that is city hall you are looking at, a part of city hall here in ferguson. city hall, about a half mile up the road, it's interesting because earlier tonight was the first time we had seen the national guard here in full uniform. the national guard troops are still here. st. louis county police have moved. i saw about 12 to 15 police cruisers speed down the stretch of road followed by two fire trucks as well. that was the most activity we had seen here all night. before that, it was very interesting because it appeared as if the peaceful protesters were going to win the night. there's a poignant scene with a woman who was in the front of the screaming demonstrators and protesters. at that point there had been a couple of t
