we work longer hours than people in any other industrialized country except maybe south korea. the average u.s. worker works 300 hours more than the average western european worker. 46% of people in the united states have not taken a week's vacation off last year. we are overworked and exhausted, and at the other end we have 10% unemployment. duh, let's just share the workload too. let's have a little more leisure like they do in europe, let's chill out and share the workload. you know why we went do that? health care. because health insurance is tied to full-time employment. there was a study that center for new american dream commission a couple years ago, they found that two-thirds of people in the united states would be happy to work less, earn less and consume less, but they can't because they'll lose their health care. so i list some big ticket items we can change. i'm all for saving the forests and these individual things, but we need to go to the bigger ticket changes, and one of the big ticket changes i have in there is that we need to choose time over stuff. and there

when you look at south korea's the initiatives on the smart grid, the u.s.ether $11 billion worth of funding toward a smart grid. we have 50 different public utility commissions and 50 different states and each one has a different relationship with their utilities. south korea has this dramatic drawn out of how much money they are going to save and how much carbon they're going to save and how they are going to recycle those dollars and how they will create $50,000 -- 50,000 jobs per year creating appliances for this bread. because we have to discuss greenhouse gases, we cannot see that we are missing this huge competitive opportunity to get out and be in the same place as the rest of the world. frankly, i find that scary. we need to start, it is kind of a dirty word, but we need to start thinking about having industrial policy and having energy policy that is a lot more systemic where we look where policy makers are willing to look at the overall system and say these are some problems that we want solved and we need to create markets to solve those problems
