south korea, china and japan, all about trying to move past this latest escalation and how can there be a diplomatic way forward? my understanding from sources is that he will be talking to these countries about what can we offer north korea to stop this cycle of threats, missile launches, missile tests and get it to start talking about denuclearization? he will also be talking to the chinese, who have a lot of influence and say, listen, you have to get tougher on north korea and try to get them to walk it back. >> is there a sense he can do that? can north korea sort of walk it back themselves or are they in sort of too far at this point? >> well, analysts and sources say that they think that north korea, kim jong un, has accomplished what he wanted to. a lot of this is for domestic politics, shore up his support at home. you've seen these pllt parades, mass demonstrations in favor of kim jong un. they think this untested leader trying to get some street cred back home has kind of done that. they are expecting that the north koreans could take some sort of action, whether it's a mis

korea's energy needs and large amounts of fuel, of food, rather, and other hum humantarian aid and making china feel with a united korea, democratic korea, but china is a large trading partner for south younger chinese leaders are increasingly recognizing including in public that north korea is a pretty ugly piece of baggage for china to carry around with it, and ultimately if china means what it says, it doesn't want a nuclear north korea which would destabilize northeast asia, there's a way to get to that point if they work together with the united states. >> kelly: precisely, as you mentioned a hard objective, but apparently it can be done. there's wiggle room if they can get both sides along with china's help to get to the table. and this missile, as you know, secretary kerry visited seoul on friday and he had to downplay the disclosure of a classified portion of a pentagon report assessing that north korea could arm a ballistic missile with a nuclear warhead. why was that so disturbing to us and how does it impact efforts to curb north korea's nuclear buildup? >> different u.s. intelligence agencies come to a different conclusion, that's not a bad thing, it's a good thing. they

south korea because war may be imminent. what's going on. david mckenzie is joining us from beijing. david, chinaas enormous influence we're told in north korea. are they engaging in some quiet diplomacy right now? >> reporter: well, wolf, they're engaging in quiet diplomacy, but not out in the open. even though north korea threatened foreigners in south korea, there are many foreigners, including chinese there, and the chinese foreign ministry said that they don't want war, they want peace. they don't want tensions, they want dialogue. no open criticisms of north korea. certainly not racheting up in public any kind of pressure on north korea. that has many lawmakers in washington frustrated. obviously they say china could have a huge amount of leverage on the north korean regime. >> what about the u.s./china level of cooperation as far as north korea is concerned? we know secretary of state john kerry is heading towards beijing. what's the latest as far as cooperation or confrontation as far as north korea is concerned? >> reporter: well, many analysts you talk to here in china have a very diffe

lap -- >> when i met with the ambassador in south korea, he sent a very serious message through china to north korea. any strike on south korea would be met by full retaliatory response. i think the united states should join in that response. it would give us an opportunity to take out their nuclear facilities, if it came to that. china is the only country with any diplomatic or economic tie to north korea. i will say one thing that has not been reported. the influence of iran here. after 1979, khomeini came to north korea and brokered a deal with north korea. ever sips that time, pakistan has been trying to build up each other's nuclear alliances as a win/win situation. we can't look at this in a vacuum, just north korea. they are very much tied part and parse welwhat is going on in iran. and iran is watching how the united states handle this is situation. so we have to be very, very -- i think very strong in what we do. >> eric: iran is violating the u.n. security council mandates on the uranium enrichments. so really, are they operating on parallel paths in the sense that maybe nor
