a rare blizzard warning now covers 300 miles of a stretch from north of lake tahoe to south of yosemite national park and ashley sharp joins us now from the heavenly valley area in south lake tahoe. good morning to you, ashley. >> reporter: hey guys. good morning. yeah, i jinxed myself because at 5:00, we stepped out and we said my goodness, it's so calm as we saw a crazy storm with wind yesterday. that wind is picking up and if you can't see it you can certainly hear it. just outside the heavenly village. pretty calm right now. not a lot of cars out but that's going to pick up throughout the morning. we have seen snow plows coming through and obviously this heavenly village and resort a popular stop for bay area folks. lot of them are already in town. and we've spoken with them for the past day and a half. now heavenly though, already making a call for today. their gondola a popular spot going to be closed and the lifts to the top closed and as much of the sierra region are going to do today, they're going to play it minute by minute to decide if they can any of the lifts but again a s

up into south lake tahoe. they are forecasting to see anywhere from 5 to 9 feet of snow anywhere from strawberry up into echo summit. it's worth noting the it's not worth hassle or the stress or the loss of potential life getting into conditions like this. you can get stuck on the roads. there's spinouts possible. not a lot of help with strong storms like this moving through when you are in the middle of the storm itself. of course afterwards, plenty. but as we see forecasted models anywhere up to around 12 feet high above 5,000 feet, this is not a joke of a storm. we have not seen the national weather service issue a blizzard warning in quite some time and that's the case for us this weekend. so i feel like we stressed it enough. this is not the weekend to head up to the sierra. so if you are staying local here in the bay area, i want to show here in the bay area as the snow falls up where ashley is at. the rain is fall back here in the bay area. as we wake up this morning and head out the door. let's take a

with snow, tires and chains are going to be able to cross donner summit and highway 50 into south lake tahoe. and we want to take a look right now at both the bay area and south lake tahoe tonight, caltrans telling people to not travel to the sierra and to stay home and standing by with a little bit more on the lookiof the conditions out. there is a day-long, a deal. >> hello, dan. yes, and you know, they're about to get more snow tonight. another band of heavy snow in the overnight hours and we're still in that blizzard warnings. you can see the radar is pretty busy here in the bay area. we're starting to see another round of showers moved through our area this evening for us in the bay area. that activity will diminish. but the snow. i'm keep going overnight in tahoe as we'll get to that in a bit take a look at the hollister area and the coast of central coast near monterey. there is actually a tornado warning the earlier this evening over there. so you can see now that area is all cleared. and now the activity they're getting a break over there. and here's that line and some light showers

the city of south lake tahoe saying there is heavy traffic on the highway toward meyers. they are urging people to wait out the storm before they tried to drive back to the bay area or anywhere else. if you end up being pulled out of the snow like this driver had to be, this was in the south lake tahoe area on the same highway, highway 50. the national weather service says the snow is accumulating fast between eight and 14 inches. chain controls continue. on top of that to the right side of your screen, i-80 is also shut down for the time being. caltrans said it could open by today. >>> it is not just the drivers on i-80 data stranded. people who just wanted to have fun skiing and now some of them are stuck in truckee. even the locals are starting to get a little fed up. those visiting say they were supposed to leave town on sunday but the weather is keeping them another day. families keeping warm and open restaurants braving the cold. one visiting family from the bay area said they come up every year for a family vacation and they were not going to let this storm stopped

let's go to darren peck. >> we checked in with ashley in south lake tahoe. she was showing us the snow. it was about a foot deep for her. this is the other side of the lake, tahoe city. you can see technically that road going across the north shore of the lake is open but there are chain controls, 25 miles per hour max. you won't go much faster. the lake levels and the communities around it sit at 6,000 feet in elevation. it's nice to see snow accumulating in that elevation. it's supposed to happen a lot more than it has this winter. it has been debilitating. we will have much more in a bit. first let's come back home. raining since thursday. it's raining now. you can see rain from the camera on top of the mark hopkins hotel. to get you caught up to speed, we got an inch and a half of rain in the north bay. san francisco got an inch and a half. san jose picked up about a half inch of rain. you see the tri-valley has gotten an inch. that says so much about the nature of this rain, this is coming in in isolated sporadic downpours. so, we will get real uneven to

this was south lake tahoe area on highway 50. weather service says snow is accumulating between eight to 14 inches and chain controls are in effect. what a hectic weekend up there. this is one of the strongest storms we have seen impact the sierra in sometime. it impacted us in the bay area too. we actually saw over an inch and a half in areas ladies and gentlemen san francisco areas. we are still adding to the numbers in areas like santa rosa and petaluma. as we wake up, it is looking pretty similar on first alert doppler with some active conditions. in the sierra they are under a winter storm warning that can last until wednesday. the bulk of the storm is passed but donner pass can see an additional eight inches of snow, blue canyon seeing closer to five inches. it is not that active currently but they are dealing recovery after the storm impacted them throughout this weekend. in the bay we got our fair splash of showers too yesterday all the way into early morning hours today. we are watching on shore showers form closer to oa

. >> max gordon joins us from south lake tahoe, california. >> good morning from a chilly, blustery southake tahoe, the snow has been relentless, snowing ever since thursday. we've had several feet pile up, more than 4 feet in some places, more snow on the way. the blizzard warning was supposed to the expire at 10:00 a.m. this morning, has been extended until 4:00 p.m. tomorrow. the winds have been whipping, mountain passes seeing gusts 40 to 60 miles an hour, whiteout conditions at times. one gust measured 190 miles per hour, that's over lake tahoe, over 8700 feet. you mentioned the interstate had to be shut down, i-80, the route between sacramento and reno that goes over the sierra. chp had to shut it down on friday because cars were spinning out, trucks were jackknifing. still no word on when i-80 will reopen. routes a had what are still open, chain controls are currently in place and officials are warning folks they should not be doing any traveling right now you in the mountains because things are extremely slippery and dangerous right now. power outages, that has been an issue. the

there is more snow in the forecast spread fox weather max gordon has more from south lake tahoe. >> thed to fall here in south lake tahoe california the massive winter snowstorm begins to wind down. massive amounts of snow here in the mountains. more than 6 feet in some spots. today people are digging out like here where workers are trying to get decent gondola back up and running. blizzard warning runs at until midnight tonight at elevations above 6500 feet the winds continued to whip over mountain passes interstate 80 the main route between reno and sacramento had to be shut down friday afternoon. cars were spinning out and crashing. trucks jackknifing the windblown snow was making it extremely dangerous acc a california hoe patrol shut down the interstate it was closed saturday as well as into sunday. u.s. 50 another major road into the sierra shut down for a time on sunday because of a snow slide. power outages were not as widespread as originally feared more than 30,000 customers lost power as a storm blew through the sierra. friday and saturday bennett resorts were either closed o

lake tahoe this weekend. fox weather's max gordon reports from south lake. >> well, finally, some blue skies and fairer weather here in south lake tahoe after this massive snowstorm blew through the sierra. some places got around eight feet of snow, but really, the biggest story line from all this has been the wind palisades tahoe recording one gust at 190mph. and it was those wind gusts and the whiteout conditions that caused i-80 to close down. one big issue, according to caltrans, is that their snow blowers are essentially breaking down and that they're down to just a handful, and they're having trouble clearing the roadway there. a lot of travel trouble amid this snowstorm. us 50 saw a snow slide yesterday. several cars actually got trapped in that snow slide. luckily, nobody was injured and caltrans was able to pull those vehicles out from there. us 50 was closed for a period of time, and it's still apparently a mess. chain controls are still in place on routes up into the sierra. either need chains or four wheel drive with snow tires to be able to drive on up here. we did see some power outages throughou

we're seeing gusts of around 35mph here in the south lake tahoe area. e been seeing very windy conditions though throughout this storm. a gust of 190mph was recorded over at palisades tahoe. that's nearing the all time record for wind gusts here in california. that record set on ward mountain back in 2017, 199mph. so just nine miles per hour short of that all time record. now, travel has been rough up here in the sierra chp warning folks to not do any travel, but those who didn't heed that warning, well, some of them got stuck on i-80. chp had to close down i-80 yesterday afternoon. cars backed up tractor trailers were jackknifing cars spinning out. it was just too dangerous at times and they had whiteout conditions on i-80. no word at this point when i-80 will reopen. uh, it's all going to have to do with the conditions. that's really kind of the word from chp. and they're still waiting on the conditions to improve. now for routes that are still open up in the sierra, us 50 being one of them, chain controls are in place on those routes still up in the s
