this is more on the northeast side of the fire closer to that south lake tahoe area and those communitiesund south lake tai what they're doing there is doing some backfiring is that is lighting some fires on that. some parts of the area where they believe the fire could burn basically to took to pry the fire of fuel if it were to come down that direction. they can't do that when the winds are so strong in those areas. but the winds have died down enough. they're able to do some of those defensive measures to hopefully stop the fire. if it ever goes that direction again. but like i said, south lake tahoe really looking good. you touched on it at the top of the broadcast. the fire seems be bypassing the south lake tahoe communities in the communities around it going towards the nevada state line. and as you mentioned, it is reached the nevada state line yet containment right now at 25%. but i imagine we could see a jump in that when we get some new numbers tonight for for now, reporting live at the counter fire. i'm chip yost. we'll sent it back to you. >> all right. thank you. chip fingers

those long lines of cars evacuees who were leaving the south lake tahoe area.hat can you tell us about how full your shelters are in that area right now? you know, actually, i have been working with the shelters in el dorado county. and so i am not up on how foal the shelters are in that area. i do know that we're opening a very large or we have opened a very large shelter in reno and that we're going to be able to handle anybody who needs our help. if we run out of room we opened another shelter, and we start to open it long before we run out of room. yes, i was going to ask you. you have the ability to very quickly get another shelter up and running if the need does arise, we do. yeah, we have supplies stashed. we have volunteers on standby. i've watched the red cross set up a shelter from nothing to housing hundreds of people in just a matter of hours. it's really very impressive. all right, obviously right now we have the kaldor fire, which is the big threat to south lake tahoe in that region, but you still have several large fires as you know, burning acro

of course we're paying close attention to what is happening around the south lake tahoe area. we are seeing some of the red sensors really starting to pick up on the road that you take heading over towards south lake tahoe. as far as smoke coming in, we are still going to see more smoke moving in. we're going to start to see the smoke returning and this shows where we do have moderate air quality in yellow and red and we will see much more of that as our temperatures heat, and we'll talk about that heading into your holiday weekend in minutes. >>> and there's concerns over another possible looming threat, covid-19. recently 16 members of the caldor fire strike team tested positive for covid-19. before the outbreak, it cut gathering sizes in half and encouraged mask wearing and hand washing and there's a medical team on site. >> we do temperature checks, and we have received a test and if it comes back positive we are removed from the incident. >> cal fire does not require that firefighters show proof of vaccinations. we have an interactive map where we can see where the caldor

south lake tahoe reporter chip yost is live for us now with an evening update. good evening. chip. >> yeah, good evening. we're here in south lake tahoe in the downtown resort area. you can see the hillsides. well, i should say you can not see the hillsides early because of all the smoke in the area. the smoke basically hiding the hillsides. the fire itself, the front of the fire is on the outskirts of south lake tahoe. it's give you an idea of where it at show you a map. this is the latest map of where the fire is and where it's going. you see the red lines are to give you an idea where we're at. we're basically on the southeast tip of lake tahoe. you see lake tahoe on the map. there were kind of on the southeast tip you see where the fire line is the red fire line of the fire. the good news right now is they expect with that fire line to possibly be much worse and much closer, not just to south lake tahoe but tahoe, but also some of the other communities threatened by the fire. let's show you some video. remember what we're talking yesterday and the day before the winds were blowing spot fires sometimes more than a mile ahead of the fire that is when members w

the town of south lake tahoe jumped highway 89 in the christmas valley area just south of myers and is moving to the east heading toward the nevada state line basically in the direction of the heavenly ski resort, maybe a little south of that. so right now it's not heading north, which is good news because that's where the 22,000 people affected by this fire but if it does. turn because of the wind shifting that could be bad news right now. more than 33,000 buildings are threatened by the caldor fire. so far at least 486 homes have been destroyed. >> firefighters from california and nevada are out there battling those flames. more than 4,000 personnel are assigned to fight the fire at last check containment has gone up a little bit. it's now 18% thousands of folks are now waiting watching out the fire in those evacuation shelters, not even sure if they will have a home to go home to. >> kron four's terisa stasio talks with evacuees today who say they escaped with their lives but left just about everything else spot. >> i am here in truckee at one of the evacuation centers that has been

south lake tahoe. more out of the north and even making its way to the northeast. and with that it is heading right towards us in the bay area. but we are tracking better sky conditions for those of you at south lake tahoe. i 80 at donner summit. but our air quality here, all that smoke and ash is getting pushed into our area because of wind directions out of the southeast for us. so that's why we're noticing the winds flowing into the east bay valleys in north bay valleys can't really tell much of a difference in the san francisco peninsula. but that smoke and haze certainly out there. we're not tracking that cool sea breeze pushing that smoke and ash away like we were yesterday and the day before yesterday that brought us the cooler weather. but fortunately, though, for south lake tahoe tracking slightly cooler temperatures still below average in the mid 70's until you gradually start to warm up calmer winds throughout this year expected this weekend and if that smoke and haze continues. it could hover and linger over this year this weekend. so keep that in mind for labor day weekend. we are tracking a warm up and that is

are focused on as we zoom in here this is eckel pass area highway 50 drops down to christmas valley heading into myers and then into the south lake tahoe center of town and you can see that this is an infrared map showing the hot spots all around the area. if you drive up there a lot, you know, a pioneer trail. that's it cut off a lot of people take getting off highway 50 takes you right into where the casinos are and so on. and these are all neighborhoods and look at this, a fire. there's hot spots all around here. but up to now, firefighters say they have not yet lost a single home in south lake tahoe and they're hoping to keep it that way. in just one other point of reference here is heavenly. this is the ski area of course it straddles and part of it goes into the nevada side. the ski area and the fire is burning in that general direction. as you see as we pull out a little bit so the fires heading this way. due to the winds now that, of course, could change crews did get some unexpected help. but if we can get the monitor the teleprompters start moving here. crews did get some unexpected weather help today when the winds didn't ge

and full containment is expected in a few weeks, but even though that was relegated to the south lake tahoe area, that was the main area of concern, the entire region has certainly been impacted, both for the residence and the businesses that count on tourists. joining us right now to talk about returning to lake tahoe is the president and ceo of incline village,re. andy, -- andy, thank you for taking the time. nice to have you. andy: thank you. kristen: lake tahoe was in the crosshairs, and you are on the other site of the lake, and i know there is late summer and early fall. talk about that. what has been the impact on you? andy: yes, the whole region got impacted. about half of the tahoe population was evacuated, the geographic area, and it was over the important labor day holiday, but we all felt around the region that it was just not appropriate to ask visitors to come up at the time. we really needed to take the roads open for evacuation opportunities, as well as emergency vehicles, so we went out with the message that now is not the time to travel to tahoe, north lake tahoe, but, meanwhil

a holiday weekend you expect to see a lot of people in the south lake tahoe area, but as you can see there is still a lot of fire activity. it's not safe for people to be on these roads. it's not safe yet for those evacuees to return home. at the caldor fire, ian cull, nbc bay area news. >> it's unsafe for a long time after that after the trees burn down, the lines are down. kari, at least there has been that opportunity for containment. >> yeah. we saw the winds calm down and those fire crews are doing incredible work. definitely commending them this morning as we are seeing more containment and there's also still a lot more smoke coming in. that's the reminder we are still in the middle of our wildfire season and we have to deal with unhealthy air quality. we're waking up to moderate air quality this morning and going to see more smoke as we go into today. a smoke advisory in effect for the air quality that will continue into the weekend. moderate air quality, that means that people who are sensitive to the wildfire smoke definitely need to limit time outside. we're going to see th

empty homes during the evacuations, officials saw a number of bears break into homes in the south lake tahoe area, the sheriff's department says. bear intrusions, as they're called, were up sharply during the week that people were evacuated. many bears were fleeing the fire and also looking for new water and food sources. and they were able to roam more freely in neighborhoods because most people were gone. cal fire continues to gain ground on the dixie fire is the massive blaze nears one million acres crews now have it 57% contained up slightly from yesterday over the last 53 days. the fire has burned 910,000 acres in five counties. is destroyed almost 700 homes along with more than 1000 other buildings. three firefighters have been injured fighting this fire, and we learned over the weekend that a firefighter assigned to the dixie fire died. marcus pacheco was a 30 year veteran and fire officials say he died of an illness last week that was not related to the fire. and then beside shows take over one day area city this labor day weekend up next, how authorities are hoping to limit the illegal a

south lake tahoe. dan thorn kron 4 news. >> a bay area man who studies fire says he has grave concerns about those fires moving toward south lake tahoe. scott stevens is a professor of fire science at u c berkeley. he says although the state has done a better job of clearing brush and setting trees and tahoe recently that still won't prevent the calder fire from seriously affecting the resort community. >> going to be sad. we're going to houses lost economies hit if it burns a big area of that part of the southern part of the basin. it could actually really have a detrimental quality to it quality. >> he says he doesn't expect the fire to move farther north than south lake tahoe. but he says it could move east into nevada. let's turn things over now to ours. meteorologist dave spahr was a look at the conditions that the crews are facing a kind and we're looking at the smoke situation that's really we mentioned about the fire not able go north of the lake, but it's now blowing off to the east a little bit, obviously because of have that southwest wind that's at work. so there you have it. south of carson

rather than that southwesterly wind that was pushing it towards areas like south lake tahoewind direction is a really good thing. it's pushing it up. away from those cities. south lake tahoe, areas like echo lake or echo lake and kirkwood as far as wind gusts co not even looking at gusty conditions at all this morning. so where are we sitting with their quality. you can definitely see there is some impact in the bay. you will notice some hazy skies in the distance today. worst of air quality stays out of the region, though. so not as much of an air quality impact as what we saw this past weekend. high pressure is building back in and along with that, a warm-up in temperatures and staying really dry through the weekend. low humidities as well. as these hot temperatures will result in a less than ideal fire conditions, but no major wind event, wind event ahead. and that is good news. and also less dry of conditions into next week. so there's things to look forward to improving conditions ever so gradually moderate air quality across the bay this morning. don't be surprised if

fire officials said today it's still too early to know when they'll be able to reopen the south lake tahoe areat that hard work continues for thousands of firefighters on the front lines tonight, janet thank you. meantime so far, the cowl door fire has skirted south lake tahoe and the communities at the southern end of the lake, but it has had a big impact on the lake itself with ash raining down on the water. new research shows the cow door fire could have a long term impact of the lakes clarity. uh major wildfire like this could roll back the water clarity work. who knows how many years? um but it's the long term impacts of consistent wildfires and mega fires in the region that are that are really concerning. the tahoe regional planning agency says recent efforts to restore marshes and wetlands to the tahoe basin will help in the lakes recovery coming into the bay area from the fires, and that advisory has now been extended through tomorrow. this is what it looked like along the oakland estuary this evening, and you can see a little bit of that, hayes. there in the sky. the items aftermath pr

live in south lake tahoe, thom jensen, nbc bay area news. >> thom, thank you. you can see thom there in smoky south lake tahoe. rob, every seems bittersweet. the smoke now here in the bay area. what's happening? >> we're seeing a combination of smoke problems ongoing. i'm glad thom jensen is wearing his n95 mask. those smoke levels around south lake tahoe are off the charts. as the firefighters pointed out, a lot less fire activity around lake tahoe. the active areas are these little red dots. there weren't a lot of those in the last 24 hours. most of those actually burning away from south lake tahoe. let's take a look at that smoke pollution level, which around south lake tahoe level was an aqi index of 700. to give you an idea, spare the air is down there, and this is where tahoe has been for the last two weeks. and more of this is going to be ongoing over the tahoe basin next couple of days, kind of in and out of that wildfire smoke at times. back to the bay area, you're seeing some unhealthy air around marin county. moderate air quality elsewhere. we'll have

thousands of people living in the lake tahoe south lake tahoe area are beginning to return to their homes on this labor day holiday late yesterday, the mandatory evacuation orders that were issued due to the huge keldorf fire were downgraded in some spots to evacuation. warnings the fire has so far burned 338 square miles since it began august 14th containment has now climbed to 44% the chp has begun taking down roadblocks on highway 50 at state line and some national guard service members who assisted with the kaldor fire have packed up and left the area. it's been a phenomenal effort, both locally, regionally and statewide to provide the highest level of fire protection to this to this incident. the calgary fire has taken a devastating toll on several communities in the sierra. it has destroyed nearly 700 homes and businesses, and not everyone can return home yet the fire is still very active in the area south of highway 88 in amador county and west of highway 50 in eldorado county. evacuation orders there remain in effect, investigators looking into the mysterious death of a family who

i'm pam moore and i'm ken wayne calmer winds fell over the area of south lake tahoe, allowing crews to divert flames for not for now from the city of south lake tahoe. several evacuation orders in eldorado county have been down graded over the last several days. despite that fire managers remain cautiously dry conditions and warmer temperatures continue to threaten to fuel the flames, pushing them to the northeast. 10's of thousands of homes are still threatened in the south lake tahoe area. so far the fire has destroyed more than 600, 80 homes in the 3 weeks. it's been burning at last check is now 32% contained. it's burned more than 213,000 acres even though the caldor fire grew about 2000 acres overnight. the fire crews say that is the minimal growth that they have been aiming for. firefighters are now taking advantage of the favorable weather conditions to try to bolster containment lines and clear dead landscape that could fuel spot fires. jeanne, when was in christmas valley with a look at how that effort is going. >> all day. crews have been putting out some spots and mopping up

we see it moving closer to the south lake tahoe area, and the more rural areas is where we have seen the fire spreading. as the smoke starts to move into the bay area, we will be concerned about that through the weekend. the green dots show where we have good air quality, and we're already starting to see some of the smoke moving in for the inland areas. that's going to be a concern this weekend as we make outdoor plans, so i'll have more on that and temperatures cranking up, and that's coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks, kari. >>> continuing our pandemic coverage, first san francisco and now berkeley will require proof of vaccinations to get inside most places. today in the bay's bob riddell life for us in the east bay. when are these requirements expected to go into effect? >> a week from tomorrow, september 10th, the city of berkeley will require everybody 12 and up to show proof of vaccination to enter most places, businesses, bars, restaurants, clubs, gyms, and large events with more than 1,000 people. the city is requiring people that work at the businesses be vaccinated by

developing, good news on the frontlines of the caldor fire still burning near south lake tahoe but from the bay area, smoke from the wildfires across the region continue to be downright unhealthy for some neighborhoods be.

definitely you know the tahoe region, the northeast areas of the fire in the southeast areas of the fire, where it's the most active. um you know, standing from the south lake tahoe area, down to kirkwood and down the 88, where it's the most active currently, what are some of the things that fire crews can do to try to stop the forward path of this fire and protect those populated areas? so if they have time they'll do structure, preparation and structure defense on the home so they'll go in and remove, you know, all dead. the dead measures vegetation that they're able to remove, and, you know, take some limbs off of trees removed basically just the goal to remove vegetation from the house that could catch fire really easily, and then they'll go director indirect with hand line, um they'll do back burning techniques so they'll put fire on the ground to burn the fuel before the fire read. just um they'll do air support with water and retardant and also use heavy equipment to put in dozer lines, um, to sort of remove the fuel and slow the fire down so far, the cal door fire is forced nearly 60,000 people to flee their homes and as this fire continues to grow,

and keep in mind that thousands of residents remain evacuated from that south lake tahoe area. so it's still not safe for them to go back. their structure is still threatened. look at this overnight time lapse video taken from a popular ski resort. those are not city lights, those are flames filling the hillsides. keep in mind this is a very popular place for people to go for vacation, labor day weekend. typically it would be packed. but you're seeing this video that was posted on twitter by emergency services. it is a ghost town right now. nobody there. a lot of residents who had to leave in a hurry said that they grabbed whatever they could, some of them sleeping in their cars, in parking lots, really a devastating situation there, even those not directly close to flames can feel that smoke, haze, and ash in the air for miles. firefighters are exhausted. not only has the caldor fire been active for 20 days, they've also been fighting the dixie fire which is more than half contained now. that's the second largest wildfire in california history. so they are tired. and this morn
