this is more on the northeast side of the fire closer to that south lake tahoe area and those communitiesund south lake tai what they're doing there is doing some backfiring is that is lighting some fires on that. some parts of the area where they believe the fire could burn basically to took to pry the fire of fuel if it were to come down that direction. they can't do that when the winds are so strong in those areas. but the winds have died down enough. they're able to do some of those defensive measures to hopefully stop the fire. if it ever goes that direction again. but like i said, south lake tahoe really looking good. you touched on it at the top of the broadcast. the fire seems be bypassing the south lake tahoe communities in the communities around it going towards the nevada state line. and as you mentioned, it is reached the nevada state line yet containment right now at 25%. but i imagine we could see a jump in that when we get some new numbers tonight for for now, reporting live at the counter fire. i'm chip yost. we'll sent it back to you. >> all right. thank you. chip fingers

been seeing all day long is firefighters and police officers patrolling the area for any potential looters. but this south lake tahoe is a ghost town right now. and it is an incredibly eerie feeling, because we're just days away from labor day. this area is supposed to be pulsating with families, weddings, what have you, everyone is gone, everyone but firefighters who have been putting in so many hours, so much labor, physical work, trying to contain this fire. that is kind of where we were at. i can't tell you how eerie it was to be driving down south lake tahoe, and you just feel like the city is yours. you're the only person there. but it's covered in this smoke. it's covered in this ash that is making it very difficult to breathe for long periods of time. but it is a very sad thing to see, because this is a gem. this is an area of california, name me a more majestic lake in california. it is incredibly heartbreaking to see this community emptied out and all these homeowners possibly bracing for the very worst. >> we've seen one or two trucks pass behind you and that's about it. let's bring in henry herrera, cal

south lake tahoe. more out of the north and even making its way to the northeast. and with that it is heading right towards us in the bay area. but we are tracking better sky conditions for those of you at south lake tahoe. i 80 at donner summit. but our air quality here, all that smoke and ash is getting pushed into our area because of wind directions out of the southeast for us. so that's why we're noticing the winds flowing into the east bay valleys in north bay valleys can't really tell much of a difference in the san francisco peninsula. but that smoke and haze certainly out there. we're not tracking that cool sea breeze pushing that smoke and ash away like we were yesterday and the day before yesterday that brought us the cooler weather. but fortunately, though, for south lake tahoe tracking slightly cooler temperatures still below average in the mid 70's until you gradually start to warm up calmer winds throughout this year expected this weekend and if that smoke and haze continues. it could hover and linger over this year this weekend. so keep that in mind for labor day weekend. we are tracking a warm up and that is

definitely you know the tahoe region, the northeast areas of the fire in the southeast areas of the fire, where it's the most active. um you know, standing from the south lake tahoe area, down to kirkwood and down the 88, where it's the most active currently, what are some of the things that fire crews can do to try to stop the forward path of this fire and protect those populated areas? so if they have time they'll do structure, preparation and structure defense on the home so they'll go in and remove, you know, all dead. the dead measures vegetation that they're able to remove, and, you know, take some limbs off of trees removed basically just the goal to remove vegetation from the house that could catch fire really easily, and then they'll go director indirect with hand line, um they'll do back burning techniques so they'll put fire on the ground to burn the fuel before the fire read. just um they'll do air support with water and retardant and also use heavy equipment to put in dozer lines, um, to sort of remove the fuel and slow the fire down so far, the cal door fire is forced nearly 60,000 people to flee their homes and as this fire continues to grow,
