the following area has been moved to an evacuation warning for all streets within the south lake tahoe city limits. this is the message residents received, explaining they could return home, but they're still in evacuation warning in place. that's because there's still a small threat from the fire as well as poor air quality heavy equipment on the roadways and some of the main access points into the city remain closed. there are dangers out there. there's ash pits in the in the wilderness. there's trees that have fallen over that still may be hot. and if something happens in the opposite direction, the in order could come back with this repopulation comes some important messages from the city. first, it applies only to those who live within the city limits. those people who do choose to return home should plan on being self sufficient for several days. stores and restaurants may not reopened soon. also not open barton hospital as they are required to undergo re certification before they can accept patients. so if you have medical issues, you may be better off staying where you are. but most

south lake tahoe. >> we have been sending our crews out there to get you a good look at what is going on, and sharon katsuda is just outside of the south lake tahoe citythere. what you have been able to see since you have been up there? there's a lot going on. >> reporter: that's right, kris and marcus, we have seen so many hot spots along the highway, and you can see along the ridge line, more active flames. we just saw a fire truck going down below there, and it's so dark you can't see, but down below there are twinkling lights. this is one of the evacuated areas, and so we saw flames on the way here in riverton along highway 50. firefighters overnight conducted a back burn so we saw the hills in that area lit up to establish a line to protect homes. at kirkwood ski resort yesterday they used snow machines to protect the resort. caldor fire is 23% contained now, and there's another problem with the fire, gravity. evacuees are looking for a place to stay to wait it out. restaurants and businesses in tahoe city are temporarily closed even though they are not in the path of the fire. many hotels closed because they don't have enough staff to help them

so far, there is no report of any fire burning in south lake tahoe city itself.ly: at this point, what is the likelihood that the fire could get to south lake tahoe? that, of course, is the main concern. mark: yes, it is. it is hard. calfire officials have not been able to say, give an estimate of their ability to keep the fire out. they have crews stationed throughout the city and throughout the southern part of the resort area, trying to keep the flames at bay, so it is very much touch-and-go. and kind of a wait-and-see situation. they have been able to keep the fire out of the out sets. that has been a good sign. emily: thank you so much for that update. one of the biggest issues facing firefighters is knowing where the flames will go next. the department of energy's pacific northwest national laboratory has developed a system that incorporates satellite imaging, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to project wildfires early in predict the path they will take. i am joined by the product manager for radar fire, this new technologically advanced system

south lake tahoe. the fire threat is high to the city of south lake tahoe. the fire is approximately three miles south of the southern border edge of the city monday. the fire was about twice as far six miles away. the wind is blowing embers, sometimes for a mile, igniting dry vegetation in causing spot fires. along highway 89 echo summit along highway 50 where we're seeing the most fire activity that includes christmas valley, where firefighters have been deployed to save homes. more than 3900. firefighters are battling the kaldor fire. it's the number one priority in the state. it's our number one priority. put everything we've got on it, but it hasn't been enough. it's time for us to leave. kevin cooper lives about two miles from south lake tahoe. he says he's taking his wife and dogs and heading to the bay area were in shock is what we're in right now. we're actually shocked that it it just kept, you know, just kept jumping in leapfrogging and how unpredictable it spent. cal fire says it's made some progress on the southwest side of the fire near summer,

lake tahoe. that fire is 49% contained after burning for nearly a month. it's torched nearly 216,000 acres of forest land near the lake. we've been tracking this story for weeks. the city of south lake tahoe was evacuated, but the fire thankfully never reached it. thousands of evacuees have begun going home this week after it burned close to 800 homes in eldorado county. this is just one of several wildfires we've been tracking. what do we have to look forward to this coming week? >> we're going to see more wind tomorrow which will take that band of wildfire smoke and smog to the south bay, which prompted the spare the air alert today. moderate air quality for wildfire smoke and ground-level ozone, and good air quality around the north bay as the wind picks up. should begin to push some of that wildfire smoke off to our east. that is one of the changes we'll see as we head toward the middle part of the week. one more very hot day inland. temperatures nearinland east ba. then we have to talk about a chance of showers. normally, that would be great news. the problem is it could involve dry lightning, and given the fact that our north bay hillsides have some of the driest fuel moi

bailing winds have backed way off down from 30 35 miles an hour down to 15 miles an hour in tahoe city or south lake tahoe. we're seeing winds 56 miles an hour. here's the fire burn area, and you can kind of see that it has moved a little bit, but most of that activity was gained last night. not not this morning, and so they did a great job. the fire the red flag warnings been dropped as you can see there. winds are light as you can see here, and as you look at the conditions for the fire, generally looking at 20 mile an hour. winds at most on the on the highest original and elevations. here's where the burn is. this is the satellite interpretation of where there's heat spots and you can see the reds. the reds are what you look for, because that's the most recent and what you're seeing here is in the christmas valley area you're seeing so they're not overrunning too much. they're actually moving a little bit towards kirk. way down in here. you can see these reds kind of getting out front. martin newer burns, but in this area up north, you're seeing less new bern so they've maintained it or contained

this happened just west of fallen leaf lake last night and then south of the city of south lake tahoeews in that it hasn't dropped into south lake tahoe just yet of course, areas further south from there like myers have seen a couple of spot fires pop up. and as we work our way through this forecast despite the fact that we don't have red flag warnings in effect anymore. it doesn't mean we're out of the woods just yet. as far as the bay area's concerned, calmer winds means better chance of haze falling out into the bay and we're already seeing the evidence of that in air quality this morning. yesterday it was good today. it is moderate and likely to see some poor pockets. a pink popping up if not today, on into tomorrow and the rest of your holiday weekend. 60's for your highs in san francisco in right along the coastline. as for bayshore cities, it will mostly be daytime highs in the 70's today. another really comfortable one for the spots saying carlos at 77 degrees. south bay temperatures mid to upper 70's san jose and i 77 freeman through hayward in the 70's. well, pleasanton and

pam moore and i'm ken wayne calmer winds fell over the area of south lake tahoe, allowing crews to divert flames for not for now from the city of south lake tahoe. several evacuation orders in eldorado county have been down graded over the last several days. despite that fire managers remain cautiously dry conditions and warmer temperatures continue to threaten to fuel the flames, pushing them to the northeast. 10's of thousands of homes are still threatened in the south lake tahoe area. so far the fire has destroyed more than 600, 80 homes in the 3 weeks. it's been burning at last check is now 32% contained. it's burned more than 213,000 acres even though the caldor fire grew about 2000 acres overnight. the fire crews say that is the minimal growth that they have been aiming for. firefighters are now taking advantage of the favorable weather conditions to try to bolster containment lines and clear dead landscape that could fuel spot fires. jeanne, when was in christmas valley with a look at how that effort is going. >> all day. crews have been putting out some spots and mopping up some areas after they say last night's weat

fire, the fire continues to march towards the city of south lake tahoe. >> firefighters facing tough conditions including fierce winds. containment rose from 18% to 20%. the flames have now burned nearly 205,000 acres and destroyed more than 700 homes and buildings. let's bring in our chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri, let's talk about those winds again. what's ahead? >> we are looking at the overall wind situation starting to calm down as we head into tomorrow. i want to start around the lucas valley. you can see the fire right here north of san rafael. a closer view will show the way the fire is moving. also back to green berry lane, you got to be on alert and of course if you got the message to get out and evacuate, you definitely want to follow those orders. we are looking at wind gusts 10 to 25. and keeping at that trend tomorrow, firefighters are again going to be watching out for those hot spots. let's bring you out to the caldor fire, the wind in the fire zone still at times gusting 20 to 50. tomorrow, wind gusts drop to 10 to 20 miles per hour. talk about a phenomenal effort

evacuees are looking for a place to stay to wait it out in south lake tahoe and north lake tahoe. restaurants and businesses in tahoe city are temporarily closed even though they are not in the path of the fire. many hotels have closed because they don't have enough staff to help them stay open. so as we approach labor day weekend. a lot of concerns out here in the lake tahoe area. potential tourists being told to stay away until things get under control. back for you. >> all right. let's go to meteorologist kari hall tracking those changing conditions, and we with were heartened to hear that things would be a little bit easier for firefighters. is that going to stay true? >> yeah. we're looking at winds coming down and so that's going to help improve the forward movement of the fire. it's not going to move as quickly as it was, but, unfortunately, as the winds calm down we also get lower visibility because the smoke is not moving. we have an active network of fire-sensing sights here and we we have yellow dots it indicates that the fire has already moved through. the red dots indicate some active fires and where the fir

south lake tahoe. so this change in wind direction is a really good thing. it's pushing it up. away from those citiesareas like echo lake or echo lake and kirkwood as far as wind gusts co not even looking at gusty conditions at all this morning. so where are we sitting with their quality. you can definitely see there is some impact in the bay. you will notice some hazy skies in the distance today. worst of air quality stays out of the region, though. so not as much of an air quality impact as what we saw this past weekend. high pressure is building back in and along with that, a warm-up in temperatures and staying really dry through the weekend. low humidities as well. as these hot temperatures will result in a less than ideal fire conditions, but no major wind event, wind event ahead. and that is good news. and also less dry of conditions into next week. so there's things to look forward to improving conditions ever so gradually moderate air quality across the bay this morning. don't be surprised if you see a couple of orange pockets indicating poor popping up come the afternoon 50's, 60's and 70's

it's just a few mile from the city of south lake tahoe and it's moving in to the christmas valley areae winds pushing the flames east. so for today. continuing of course with that heavy smoke, low relative humidity values and gusty conditions. that's why a red flag warning continues for that area until 11 tonight. future cast winds gusting as we head through the day for that region up to about 20 to 38 miles an hour. it still looks windy even for tomorrow and as we go through the day for the tahoe area future cast humidity dropping down to the single digits. very dry air and a big concern as we go through the next several hours. monitoring the caldor fire and the extreme fire weather conditions. for the bay area the coolest day of the week with that stronger ocean breeze. the westerly winds helping us here with good to moderate air quality. we will stay below average as we look to tomorrow and warming up, heating up especially inland for this labor day weekend. air quality forecast and a good to moderate category. could see a little bit of haze in the upper level office the atmosphere.
