i began as a young social worker in south los angeles.ng infested housing projects that are now almost mythic, jordan downs and nickerson gardens, and i worked in these projects during what is referred to as the decade of death, when crack and unregulated gun availability laid waste to communities of color. in los angeles during the late 1980's and early 1990's, there were 1000 homicides per year in the city of los angeles, not the county, the city. now, we have between 203 hundred homicides per year. people talk about the gang problem having been addressed. i want to share with you, what i experienced, what i have learned, i am not a typical academic. i will not quote statistics to you or talk about theories. i will talk with you about practicality. pragmatic approaches, and i will talk about reality. san francisco, like los angeles learned, will never saw or deal with its gang problems effectively unless there is true collaboration. i will talk to you about what this looks like and feels like. i will speak to you about the lessons that

them all the time we are in a nice studio now up in the hollywood area of los angeles, but i work, my office building is in southcentral los angeles, so i see this all the time and i am certainly around poor people and people of color all the time in what i do, and i choose to be there, so i am not chagrined by that. but i see this all the time. i was at a restaurant the other night and i saw this happen, where people who happen to be poor already are parenting kids who they wish they could do more for anyway. they wish they could do more for them, they wish they could provide more for them you know where i am going with this so that so often, parents do not like to tell their kids no. they do not want to deny them a trip to mcdonald's, and i am not trying to bash mcdonald's. but whether it is a trip to mcdonald's, whether it is x, y or z, they do not want to deny those kids. so i know too many parents, see too many parents, often who think that denying their kids is hurting their kids when they are already in poverty to begin with, so they do not see that outcome that you've just suggested. >> but that is love.

some uncertain solutions and a couple of people that i'm so excited about she moved into south central los angeles sent them to school to a neighborhood school across the street from the chemical plating plant that her kids are coming withits and headaches and she started asking questions to find out that there was a lot of this going on in this little school and then she started looking at the plant across the street and started asking questions in question came boundaries and demanding answers then she got soil samples and senate to work with local environmental groups and they test the soil and found these exposures that were possibly creating both air and ground issues and even cancers with some of the teachers and the school. what she did was after eight years she got the chemical plant closedown it took her eight years in a battle that for eight years cut 750 class in dallas to meet the issue of the school the city council did tonight everybody was on her side she us speaks english she is graduating college and going to law school. from science to social justice she has moved it from the lab
