i draw creative strength from my route in south louisiana. storm i did not appreciate how much those roots were the pain connecting my heart, the body of historical, and the man i am becoming every day. summon time in the 1850s, nobody knows exactly when, on the banks of the kentucky river, a boy was trusted in the basket of a slave mother's arm as she said goodbye to their family and sailed away. one white man had sold mother and child to another white man. the child's father, brothers and sisters stood on the water's edge in tears. 500 miles downriver, the passage of the mother and her child ended on a sugar cane plantation this was a fertile patch of land between the mississippi river and the bayou. the master forced his name on the mother and child, harris, that is how my family came to south louisiana. years later after the emancipation in 1865, he told his children that his earliest memories are of his mother teaching him to say his prayers at night. telling him that when freedom comes, as it surely would, to go on a quest, you are not
