look at all these volunteers, these are just folks here from the south and west side of maui who cameuel, the things they really need. we just talked to one of the captains on complete volunteer crowd sourced efforts, put them up on my social media if you want to support them but a woman named grace hertz is leading the effort on one boat and they've been beach landing all these vital supplies. they say they need diesel fuel, premium fuel, baby supplies, burn medications, obviously, desperately needed out there so this is what's happening. she said they've seen some looting at night. there's national guardsmen out there dealing with that. armed looters at night. i just also spoke with one of the county commissioners of south maui, a gentleman named tom cook, at another rallying spot for first responders and you can just see the emotion, the strain on these officials now as they're caught between anxious residents real eager to get home and cadaver teams still looking for people who are lost. this is tom cook. >> well, first let me just say our hearts are breaking for you. around the c

right behind me >> has not been long all morning long, but i did speak with the family heading to south mauie going to hawaii to the island of maui to help some family who have lost 2 homes in those wildfires. the governor says that all nonessential travel to west maui is strongly being discouraged through the end of this month and that the hotels and west now we have temporarily stopped accepting reservations at this time because the travel industry right now, its focus on helping the community helping to support residents. evacuees who have lost loved ones, homes, precious belongings and businesses, along with disaster workers vacation. rental owners are also being asked to make their accommodations available to house displaced residents with airbnb also helping out with this effort as the death toll continues to climb for the wildfires are from the wildfires that have devastated that area. there have been evacuations of thousands of residents and visitors along with major roadways closed down. and experts are also warning that hazardous materials are also likely present their governor. th

south maui is still operational from a resort standpoint. figure out a little bit more of a medium term, temporary shelters situation. and then today, teams from fema are arriving with dogs to do the final search and rescue. because nobody has entered any of these structures that have burned down. that's where we unfortunately anticipate that the death toll will rise significantly. simultaneous to that, we've reopened the road to west mally. west mally is a pretty good -- pretty big -- not just lahaina. townline batten is not detectable, it's not safe to be there. but the rest of west mally was cut off from vehicular access, so people were starting to run out of stuff. toilet paper, water, gasoline, food, clothing, everything. that has been reopened and we will kind of alleviate a little bit of the challenge. over the next several weeks and months, it is going to be a big job of debris removal. it is not safe to go into the haina. it is not safe to rebuild in lahaina. it's not even safe to remove stuff. so fema, the e department of defense,

maui emergency management. what she was tell ing me sound like a dire situation happening, especially on the west and south sidees are down on the west side of the island. that is where a majority of the hotels, businesses and residential properties are located. you can imagine the frustrations and the difficulties there without having that emergency communication available. also describing moments where people actually had to jump into the ocean just to avoid fire and wildfire smoke. they were rescued by the u.s. coast guard, brought to safety. but there are multiple firesen o ongoing. that's where the combination of hotels and resorts are located. but there's mandatory evacuation orders. she called this an all-hands-on deck situation. they are requesting extra fire personnel from the state, and they are in the process of make ing that actively occur right now three active fires or three portions of the island, all being fuelled indirectly by what was hurricane dora, that just moved south of the island chain within the past 24 hours or so. so what we're seeing is the influx of easterly winds that's helping fue
