specifically islands in the south pacific where a lot of navy personnel were kind of waiting out the war, doing their jobs, looking up for the buddies but not involved in fighting. and they were also, many of them for the first time in a cultural setting, different cultures, different race, different ethnicity that they had never had to deal with this before. so it was about trying to adapt to those circumstances. now it happened to win the pulitzer prize, so at the time of the korean war, nation or was kind of a famous author and houston-based dispatches these dispatches to the reader's digest and "saturday evening post" anti-newspapers as well. everybody remember newspapers? so he was embedded. so i got his manuscript and his notes. they are all on microfilm. and some for my own network of contacts. i began to see if i could find some of the sailors and airmen who were on those ships. michner was on uss essex and he was on the uss valley forge. usually for about a month at a time. so i started identifying people who have been there at the time, and i would ask them, here's this cha

we have a system of low pressure in the pacific northwest to slide south heading through the next 24ours right along the coast here. and for us that means the first showers will start right around noon. as you can see right now for the post part precipitation is coming down to the north of ukiah and clear lake. by noon this is what it looks like. the futurecast shows showers pushing into the north bay. 10:00 p.m. tonight when our snow levels fall to 1,000 feet we have widespread shower activity. that's going to make for a very dangerous commute tomorrow morning. take a look at your 7:00 a.m. forecast. showers still coming down, icy conditions. you definitely want to tune in tomorrow morning to find out what you are facing. this is a breakdown for you. snow levels around 1,000 feet tonight. a freeze watch goes up for the north bay as we head into friday. temperatures are very, very cold in the mid-20s friday night. so you want to protect that sensitive vegetation. bring in the pets. then saturday morning if we see any rain it will be cold enough for snow levels to fall to 500 feet and

just south of here is some also rock where the san andreas fault goes into the pacific ocean. this is closest to the san andreas fault. many people believe that the closer you are to default, the greater the ground motion might be. that is a portion that is a south westerly portion of san francisco that has some special earthquake hazards. we are here to talk about the geology of this area. why don't you tell us about what is going on? >> there is a giant step here at the edge of the escarpment, the edge of the landslide. all the land to the west of us is part of a landslide that is upwards of 200 feet deep. it goes underneath the ocean. it causes damage and it was mapped by the earliest geologists'. there are many kinds of rocks here. there is a big sequence of merced formation. this is a base in deposit that was formed by the interaction at the end of the continental margin. >> this is just on top. this is the same material that we were looking at at the last site. you can see it is on our way to the last side. it is deposited here by wind. it is 40-50 feet thick. this acts a
