were wondering where we would go with a flying p 39 and we were going to north africa and the south pacific. somewhere in there, from between that time we left casper and got overseas, we learned we were going to get the brand-new p 51 bravo and we had not even seen one let alone fly one. they are going to get the airplanes in the theater and we are going to check ourselves out in them. i can make it really bad, but once we flew that airplane, we were so happy we did not care if we had a handbook or not. it was so much better than the p-39. we loved it. that is an example of my airplane right before d-day. you can see the large external tanks. gallons on each outside the airplane. the tanks were made out of paper and resin and they were actually pretty good if you did not fly too fast. they would shatter on you. but you used that first and then got rid of them. then you still had 90 in one wing, 90 in the other wing, and 85 gallons behind you. 85 gallons behind you made the airplane unstable. you would be in a steep turn pulling back on the stick and it would get lighter and lighter and lig
