as many new bedford boys he went to see a border whaling ship bound for the south pacific. jason wilson was indeed working in latin american in chile when he received word that civil war had broken out back home. he returned home ready to get in the fray. he returned to new orleans where he hoped to be reunited with his father who had been south many years ago. he enlisted as a private in the second louisiana guard. a new regiment composed of african-americans and later changed to the 73rd. he enlisted in the 54th massachusetts infantry. he returned south only to be wounded severely wounded in the back and abdomen in february of 1864 at the battle of alusty in florida. again he was honorably discharged again he returned to massachusetts. remarkably wilson chose to enter the fray a third time. in september of 1864 he returned to norfolk virginia. he dispatched on a boat and he worked with the u.s. secret service with the army of the james in front of richmond. the end of the war found wilson back in norfolk tending a supply store that supplied good to freed people. wilson's
