that is the emergency spillway and all of that water is spilling into some communities in south san jose. and we have new showers out there. it is not that widespread but it is pouring in a couple of spots. the valley, san ramon heavy showers. leaving san leandro and hayward, look, there's more. pacifica, half moon bay, all the way down to mountain view getting some heavier showers. we will zoom out wide. north bay, not that much. this is basically right through the heart of san francisco bay stretching from the city itself stout palo alto, then across the east bay up to antioch. snow in the sierra. it has been snowing all day long. the highest peaks, another 18 inches of snow tonight and tomorrow. check the snowpack. it is 185% of average. this is an amazing stat to me. i have to explain, it will take 15 seconds. we got normal rainfall from today through june, if we did we would end up with 32.5 inches of rain in san francisco. that's a ton of rain. it is nowhere close to the amount of rain we got in that el niÑo winter in 1997 and 1998. it's the most in 20 years but if you have lived h

south bay. specifically in san jose this is the result of flooding at coyote creak. we have been watching picture. fire department evacuating people from their homes and their apartments. we now businesses are affected as well. just got the e-mail from santa clara county. they say workers in two offices being evacuated due to the flooding of the creek. people who work on santa jose and the cal works continuing benefits office also there are being told to leave their offices. they are being helped to higher ground. the floating is having a wide effect. residential and businesses. we are keeping in mind that an evacuation order remains in place. that's where a levee broke along the san joaquin river. >>> alex savage shows us the work to repair that damaged levee. >> reporter: crews have been working throughout the night on a temporary fix for the problem. they have been dumping large rocks in to the gap in this levee trying to shore it up and they are hoping that will hold. the levee breached along the eastside of the river. just southwest -- it happened late in the da

just as the sun was setting on san jose. >> got to go. >> got to go. >> reporter: the south bay mobile home park on oakland road slowly began taking on flood water. >> they made it clear it was urgent for everyone to evacuate for everyone's safety. >> reporter: city employees have been going door to door saying you need to leave. coyote creek has invaded the mobile home park, you can see water gushing through a hole in the fence. and, you can actually hear the water on the other side trying to get in. this is a very dangerous situation. seems like this had been playing out all day in san jose. at this apartment complex at center, officials told residents the water was contaminated so they should wait to be rescued. fire boats packed entire families on board. some decided to walk out on their own bringing very few belongings. it took a lot of people by surprise. >> i left for school and came back and said what is going on? >> reporter: horses and cars were trapped in high water raising the safety concern. everybody had to be rinsed off. humans and pets. >> they are being decontaminated

downpours across east bay over the bay into the peninsula down to the south bay and santa cruz mountains. in this part of san jose, a drenching going on now. south of san jose, down into the coyote area. let's look at the flash flood warnings. we have one in alameda creek. also flash flood warning in effect for this area just east of northeast of hollister until 4:00 p.m. and along coyote creek and highway 101 and 680 and 880, flood warning is in effect until 6:40. the storm is still a strong storm. it ranked three on the storm impact scale. we have scattered downpours now. they will continue through the late afternoon and into the early evening hours with flash flood watches and warnings in effect and winds expected to increase during the evening hours. there's a forecast animation. over the next couple hours, a steady pattern of what we have. widespread downpours including moderate to heavy rain developing offshore and moving onshore. a little after 7:00 p.m., we will see the storm break up into areas of moderate to heavy rain as opposed to steady rain. later tonight, a wave of rain move to the north bay again,

school is back in session tomorrow the evacuees are moving to the seven trees community center in south san jose. they say more than 1300 people still cannot stay in their homes. and with more rain looming, city crews are on high alert. >> we will have 24/7 monitoring of any storm activity. all three affected areas, some of the storm collection system is is not currently in operation and so we will have pumping crews available. >> hundreds of families have signed up for emergency assistance this weekend. we have learned a juvenile inmate who escaped sfr custody in the south bay after the threat of flooding from coyote creek forced the evacuation of a work camp. that inmate is still on the loose this morning. we first broke the story last night on our twitter feed as several juf ny inmates were being taken back to the james ranch in morgan hill one of them ran from the vehicle and remains on the loose this morning. two other inmates also tried to escape. they were quickly caught. the inmate out there is not considered a violent offender. >>> it is still a long road to recovery from the flooding i

san jose 54, san mateo 35. the storm is beginning to try to move to the south but still kicking up moisture across the bay area. as we get a closer look, winds are beginning to calm down. just 11-mile-per-hour gusts in san jose, 14 in san francisco and 8 for livermore. in terms of rainfall, still widespread with the storm sticking around longer than expected. we do think this continue rainfall into berkeley at 6:25 tonight. possibly some heavier rain for martinez at 6:46. the good news is the rainfall is beginning to break up a little bit here to the south. so we'll probably have about three more hours left of the wet weather and things try to taper off. where it is the worst right now is down in southern california. we have storm ranger located there. flooding and mud slides are possible. we'll have more updates throughout the show. my next update at 6:10 tonight. >> now that messy commute in san jose, major traffic issue on 880 this morning when power lines fell on the southbound lanes and a massive tree blocked all the northbound lines. crews removed the power lines and then the big tree. all lanes didn't re

these historic numbers where the creek would hit 13.6 feet today where they would run through south san jose, the highest crest in 100 years with the next highest in 1922 and 1917. the highest they had been in recent history was just over 12 feet in january of 1997. >> the chief meteorologist is here now. how much did we get today? >> five to six inches of rain in the water shed of the reservoir, look at some of their rain totals, half a foot of rain by the lexington reservoir and half a foot of rain by boulder creek. five inches of rain out by the anderson reservoir area, so it is very aggressive rainfall. and that is how we would get to this point where we would have a flood warning now. they drop at 11:30 and the creek right now is at 12.6 feet, dropping a foot. but it is still just 2.6 feet above flood stage as they will be coming down taking about 18 more hours to come down below flood stage. and so as we would look outside. we have more showers, but that's the good news. showers are obviously ending out there, giving you a break on the water shed there, helping out grately with more sh

it is still hammering the santa cruz mountains and it is still shammerring south of san jose.s is going off down here. you see this plug. that's going to cause problems in the burn zone. so anticipate some problems in the santa cruz mountains over the next hour or so as this thing lingers even in san jose and saratoga and los gatos. the rain is continuing to fall steadily. outside now you can see it's mostly cloudy but pretty dry for most of us. tomorrow is going to be this kind of a day. you are going to see some sun, some clouds. maybe a sprinkle. but boy, a big break compared to what we have seen. but we have had so much water. we've had so much water rung on the hills. i showed you 205% of rainfall average in the santa rosa area so that's building up in the. so i so rob roth is up in orinda right now where we are seeing he is special in those east bay hills we are seeing a lot of slumping on those hillsides. >> reporter: well, that's right, bill. it has been raining all day and raining hard. just about a minute ago it sort of calmed down but it's been quite a washout here.
