one in morgan hill and the other in south san jose. part of our breaking news coverage throughout the afternoon. the morgan hill fire on the left side of your screen has torched 40 acres so far. the south san jose fire is now 80% contained. there are evacuations at the nearby ibm research facility and muriel wright school. >> nbc bay area's marianne favro joints us live from morgan hill with the latest on that first fire which broke out early this afternoon and what's the latest update? >> reporter: well, i just spoke with cal fire, and they tell me this fire is now 65% contained, but despite that progress, there are major concerns out here right now about flare-ups. the fire threatened 20 homes, including the one you see here, and right now crews have surrounded this house just because of concerns about flare-ups. we, in fact, did see a flare-up with fast-moving flames less than an hour ago. flames destroyed three out buildings. 100 degrees helped spread just this fire quickly. we spoke with one woman who checked on her horse. >> i ran

one of the fires is still burning in the santa teresa county park area of south san jose. it started yesterday an hour after crews finished working on another fire. that fire was on ranch land in morgan hill just six miles to the south. the fire burned through a stable and killed four horses that were trapped inside. another horse was able to escape the barn and survive. fire crews called in cal fire helicopters to drop water on the flames. it did destroy three buildings and a couple of cars as it burned across 40 acres. the winds had picked up by the time that fire started and pushed the flames close to home. firefighters say this is just an indicator of what to expect the rest of the summer. >>> there's a lot at-risk wild land areas that very quickly can become a fast moving fire. >>> the winds are most likely to pick up in the late afternoon so they had to call in planes to drop fire retardant near the homes. the fire is now 75% contained. ktvu lee martinez is there keeping an eye on the progress. she will have a live update in next half hour. >>> tomorrow top officials

we are live in south san jose where crews are monitoring the grass fire out there. they managed to make a little bit of progress. >> good morning. we have been told there is progress to report to you. they say one of those fires has been contained. they are working to contain the other. that one is here. behind me here you can see the staging area. you can smell smoke in the area. we are not that far over that bridge from where they are working. let me show you. they say the fire spread to 100 acres but is about 75% contained this morning. it began here about 3:00 yesterday afternoon. they made repeated water drops as the flames burned dangerously close to homes. the abm research facility were both evacuated and it was too close for comfort for some of the homeowners. >> we ran out here with my one-year-old in my arms. that whole hill over there had already burned up. >> about an hour before that the hail fire broke out. it was a fast moving gras fire. it ripped through threatening about 15 homes. it also tore through a ranch. one was able to escape. they say about
