we're outside caain jason dahl elementary school here in south san jose.r them right there. they're saying save our school. they're asking the franklin-mckinley school district to save their school and not shut down this campus. doll elementary, especially these parents, not only because their kids attend class here, but for the community. it's special because it's named after the man who piloted united flight 93 before it crashed on nine over 11. doll elementary is one of five schools on a list for potential closure in the franklin-mckinley school district here in south san jose. the district says cuts are necessary because it has lost 40% of its student body since 2011. the district says no final decision has been made and in a statement wrote, quote, if captain jason dahl elementary is selected for closure, we remain deeply committed to honoring and celebrating the legacy of captain dahl, a hero who will always hold a special place in our community. this school has been in the san jose neigighborhood for generations. many students are still able to walk

dozens lining up at a post office in south san jose waiting to apply for a passport. many of the people in line told us they're rushing to get passports now so they can have further proof of their citizenship if needed. mr. trump promised during his campaign to carry out mass deportations of undocumented immigrants and signed an executive order ending birthright citizenship. although a federal judge has temporarily halted that plan. one person we spoke with expressed frustration over just how difficult it is to get a passport. i'm here to get my new passport. i was here since around 550 in the morning, but you have to get here by 6 a.m. but i got there's only 15 spots that are available towards the public for walk ins on saturdays. and i got 19, which is kind of frustrating. someone else we spoke with said they tried to book an appointment online, but all of the slots were booked for weeks. now, speaking of immigration and citizenship, state senator aisha wahab, who represents part of santa clara and alameda counties, hosted a virtual immigration town hall today. seve

also on the list for their south san jose 2720. both of those numbers, by the way, up san francisco, about by about 4% from this time last year. san jose up by about 7%. and the same is true of two bedroom apartments in both the north bay and the south bay. they are higher than at this point last year. so what's driving up rents again? you know, it's largely according to zumper, which is the bay area rent tracker that we heard from today. companies in places like silicon valley and in san francisco wanting people back in the office more like either full time or three days a week. a perfect example in san francisco would be salesforce. they're a huge employer up in the city, and they're bringing people back. also, if you look at places sort of san jose adjacent like cupertino, palo alto, mountain view, santa clara, where nvidia is, you're seeing a lot of these big tech companies. they're still growing, they're paying well, and they're saying, we want you back in the office. and a lot of people are saying, okay, but then another facto

san jose was christmas eve, december 24th. and since january 1st, we've only gotten a couple of hundredths of an inch so far. so to date we're talking less than two inches for the south bay. a typical rain shadowed san jose. a lot of the santa cruz mountains, of course, take majority of that rainfall through system. so right now this is what your 7-day forecast is looking like, a very low possibility for saturday. we're talking a 10% chance of seeing some spotty showers through that saturday forecast. by the time we inch into sunday, that system will be completely cleared out. and then we'll start to dip in those morning lows, but also the afternoon highs. we're going to get a bit more seasonable, dropping down by as much as ten degrees in some spots in through parts of the interior. we're going to max out only in those upper 50s, so definitely expect to keep the dry conditions. as far as your traffic goes, we've been doing good here so far. the bay bridge toll plaza has managed to keep its lights off, although typically the metering lights come on right around 525. but looking at this camera, i can see that that traffic has already started to build. so there is a po

south bay. city leaders say immigration and customs enforcement agents carried out an operation in east san jose today. not clear exactly what or who they were targeting, but as nbc bay area's marianne favro reports, it has many people in east san jose on edge. ice agents were spotted here in this target parking lot off story and king road, and also in front of a home nearby, sparking fear among many in this community. ice agents seen on video in a parking lot in east san jose sunday afternoon, prompting many calls to the santa clara county rapid response network. they weren't just picking people off the street. it did appear that it was targeted. unfortunately, though, that causes panic throughout the community. just a few blocks from this shopping center, ice agents were also spotted in front of a home on king road. so i heaeaded over ad checked it out. so carl montano with the santa clara county rapid response network, says she saw five agents and says they confirmed to her they were with ice. i saw three unmarked cars an agents in bulletproof vests, so i pulled over, parked safely, and then

that's in south san jose. here there are about 20. >> oversized vehicles that are currently parked there, locations of tow away zones were selected in areas of rv's that are close to schools waterways and interim housing facilities. the city says the section of channel with avenue received warnings today with zone starting to be implemented on january 13th. there are about 30 sites in total in the city where they're planning on cleaning up over the next 6 months. well, people who are unhoused along the train tracks pose an unsafe and dangerous problem for railroad workers across california cities. and that includes in san jose. conditions have shown just how close workers and riders pass by homeless encampments along the track. railroad officials say that homeless encampments, loitering and dumping not only prevent the company from effectively serving area businesses, but it can become dangerous for railroad workers and riders if they have to confront people or objects that are blocking the tracks. >> it's 8.1

at subfreezing numbers out there in the tri-valley, 32 in pleasanton right now, as well as in south san joset the 20s are on the map right now 29, in danville, fairfield, sonoma, those low 30s up there in the north bay, putting them under a freeze warning while the rest of us sit under a frost advisory until about 10 a.m. and then we start to warm up from there. a nice day, not only today, but into tomorrow. we're looking at possible 70s on the map for january. that is very impressive. it continues on into our thursday to where we'll feel those mild numbers, but then not so fast, though, as we go on into friday and the weekend with the chance of seeing some rain showers and the numbers taking a hit. so we go on and take a look at this long range outlook going on into friday, saturday, sunday we see the low dropping, moving that stubborn high pressure out of the way for just a second. so it will bring a chance of seeing some showers here in the bay area and down into southern california, and a chance of some light dusting through the sierra, so the rain could be really helpful for the fire cr

that is a busy ride as you work your way out of south san jose and really slowing down near that 280've got a lot of brake lights in and around that area. now northbound 280 through downtown san jose, actually looking, you know, okay for the most part. we're not seeing too many brake lights. but 85 starting to build up a little bit as well as 87. parkway. some of the routes down in san jose we're seeing slow conditions but travel times out of the south bay the rest of the way through the peninsula actually pretty quiet. as you head northbound working your way over into redwood city. and all the way towards sfo. at least so far, so good through there. a little buildsier though as you head into san francisco. in the south bay, angry protests today over the recent immigration enforcement in san jose. students and community members hit the streets to denounce the ice activity over the last few days. the enforcement sent fears throughout the immigrant community in the south bay. nbc bay area's damian trujillo is in san jose withh the story. it's been a peaceful protest here on story road. police actually closed off some of the streets to allow these protesters to carry o their message. but just the fear of deportation has many people here on edge, she said. they were loud and they were angry. students at overfelt high school walked out at two this afternoon to protest the recent ice activity in san jose. it was organized by sophomores. i know i have a lot of friends who have. families are undocumented, and they're really worried about if even they should come to school today. and since ice was seen at story and king target, that makes them even more worried. many come to school fearful of what might happen when they get home. will their parents still be there? kevin alvarado worries

so the first tollway zone right there along channel with avenue by snow thats in south san jose. there are about 20 oversized vehicles currently parked there, the locations of tow away zones, by the way, were selected in areas where rv's are close to schools and waterways and interim housing facilities. the city says this section of channel with avenue receives warnings today and then the tollway will be enforced starting january 13th. there are about 30 sites in total that the city's planning on cleaning up over the next 6 months. will people who are unhoused now along train tracks pose an unsafe and dangerous problem for railroad workers across california cities. and that includes in san jose. so conditions have shown just how close workers and riders passed by these homeless encampments along the tracks. and rebel officials say that these encampments, along with loitering and dumping prevent the company from effectively serving the areas and in some cases it can be dangerous for railroad workers and riders if they have to confront people or objects that are blocking the tracks

napa is at 34 degrees and 44 in san francisco, with some mid 30s for los altos and upper 30s for south san jose. another cold morning. we'll see more of these ahead. and then we make a nice recovery for the afternoon as those temperatures get a boost into the upper 50s and low 60s. and we do continue to warm up over the next few days, with a high of 64 tomorrow in hayward and 66 in morgan hill. even some upper 60s possible through the middle of the week as the north bay hits 68 degrees on wednesday. and then we are going to see those temperatures, the warm weather, continue. but take a look at the polar vortex that's sending historic temperatures across much of the country. as we take a look at the snow that's falling from denver to kansas to oklahoma city, this will be pushing across the south as well as meeting up with some moisture, and they may have an unprecedented snow storm across the gulf coast with spots like houston, new orleans, as well as over toward the panhandle of florida. getting the potential low temperatures startingigit tomorrow. we've also been talking about the inauguration
