it's expected to make landfall along the south texas coast early tomorrow morning. pical storm system to threaten the u.s. this year. the weather channel's paul goodlow is in north padre island, texas. how big is this one supposed to get, paul? >> reporter: it turned out the size is a pretty small storm, contessa. it's going to be wide ranging. the good news is it is a moderate tropical storm. sustained winds at 50 miles per hour. there's still a slight chance it could strengthen for landfall. thoi moved up the landfall point probably to 9:00 and midnight local time here. i'm in north padre island. it's the northern end of the 130-mile long warier island between here and south padre to the east of brownsville. that's where don will come ashore. here north padre we're going to see waves increase awem as rain. the heaviest rains will be south of us. and definitely the south padre island, brownsville seeing the bulk of that rain. as everyone knows texas in a long-term drought. it extends from 2010 they do need the rain. this one not packing as much rain as we would like

it's heading in the general direction of the south texas coast. you're safe in florida, you're save in louisiana, mississippi and alabama. this is heading to the southeast. here's the track just in from the national hurricane center. you notice the timing of it, it's going to take it today into the center of the gulf, and then towards the texas coast late friday night into early saturday morning. there will be a landfall, it's not a big deal, with a weak storm system you're not going to have the eye of the hurricane or anything like that. it's just, that's when the center will cross. we'll watch that on radar. it looks like, houston, you're out of the cone of uncertainty. that's this yellow cone. it should come onshore around corpus christi or brownsville and then it will dissipate as it moves into the mountainous terrain. here's how the computer models, each of these squigly lines represents each computer, and an almost unanimous decision, it will take us south to corpus christi. only one of our computers is hinting on a northward's track. in the

a lot of people in south texas say bringing it on and give us some rain. it is so needed in that area. marysol castro is here with the latest on don. normally, you don't see people saying bring on the tropical storm. >> absolutely not. good morning to you at home. it's churning in the gulf of mexico about 650 miles off the coast of corpus christi, texas. moving 10 miles an hour west/northwest and actually picking up a little bit of speed packing 40-mile-per-hour winds. expected to make landfall in the overnight hours and as you mentioned, erica, a portion of the country experience is the worst drought p.m. almost on record, portions of texas have seen a drought conditions for the last nine months. this tropical storm is expected to bring anywhere from 2 to 5 inches of rain. that doesn't seem like a lot of rain, but when you're talking about a drought, any precipitation is welcome precipitation and, of course, we're going to keep an eye on this and tell but your natural forecast later on in the show. back to you. >> thanks. check back in a bit. >>> swing to

people in south texas are preparing for the worst as a tropical storm barrels in from the gulf. rob marciano is in the extreme weather center. this is where one of the rare things, people in texas are saying i hope some part of the tropical storm gets to us so we get rain but don't want a tropical storm. >> right. it is a tropical cyclone with a positive spin. at this point we are hoping that we can get it into texas and if we can keep it at a -- you know, most category 1 hurricane, that would be ideal. the uncertainty of the intensity forecast, though, is really -- paramount here. we are not really sure how strong it is going to get. pretty sure about the track, though. it is not very organized at the moment. just off the yucatan peninsula. about 600 miles from the coast of texas. and it is forecasted to med that way here over the next couple of days. landfall likely tomorrow night. as either a tropical storm or a minimal hurricane. somewhere between brownsville and houston is the forecast track. this would bring much needed rainfall into this area. where they got a ton of rain

south of corpus christi. but they need about 15 to 17 inches there in parts of texas. meanwhile back here, we are out of our drought from our very, very strong rainfall season. not only this year, but for the past two years in a row. and right now we're also tracking some rainfall up here across the sierra. it's been a while since we've had to pull out the ray todarad. but more on that later on. and on shore cooling flow. 64 in san francisco, 80 in is show and i. livermore officially with 87 degrees. so slightly above average in the east bay. but the fog coming back quickly. 68 here in san francisco and winds northwest at 17. other numbers that are down right now with that on shore flow, san jose already at 74. winds mainly westerly at 5 to 10 miles per hour. that will keep it cool tonight. look at this marine layer, it is just really going here up at about 2,000 feet offshore. that's why we're not going to see some really hot weather this weekend. we're talking about mainly 80s here with this region of high pressure and it's also going to feel a little bit sticky out

we were hoping for a big relief from the drought, at least for south texas. that didn't come to fruition. there are probably two groups this helped out. the kite boarders and cotton farmers. kite boarders yesterday out here. wind picking up 20 to 30 miles per hour with some of the gusts out here. that allowed them to catch huge air an what little wave set-up we had compliments of don moving in. it was a fun show for everybody to watch. a lot of people out here because don not evacuating the beaches. other folks were the cotton farmers. 80,000 acres of cotton. they got about 60% of that picked. they were concerned about the other 40%. that would mean more losses to this multibillion dollar drought already. when you get cotton wet, it's no good any more. we didn't get it wet because we didn't have rainfall in much of this area. a lot of the crop was spared as a result of that. they could not get enough people and machinery to pick the crop. now where do we go from here in texas? the drought continues. the humidity is higher. that means the heat index goes up. e
