draper, in this book you asked the question, could a black kid from south-central los angeles be the photographer for the president of the united states? what is the answer to that question? >> guest: that's a big yes. >> host: how did you get the job? >> guest: well, back in 2000 i was as assigned by the associated press to cover the bush campaign because i was a staff photographer. that's my background is photo journalism. so i covered the campaign full time for 18 months nearly. >> host: did you get to know the president in, did you get to know the president in that kind of work? >> guest: you do. you do. you spend a lot of time on the road, mostly with other journalists and a lot of time with staff, campaign staff. i really didn't think about the job until actually after the election because you might remember the election wasn't decided that night and during the recount, well, that gave me the opportunity to pursue the position if governor bush had won the election. and, everything lined up. there was perfect timing for me because right after he became president-elect i had the

question you've lived in los angeles for a while you've dabbled in politics there how is the community responded to police tactics in your area. you know i live in south central los angeles is pretty internationally known for police brutality you know that's where rodney king the beating took place the people in the street like i said they've been saying that this happens all the time in our community this is so happened to be caught on video and it was an animal they got shot but unfortunately this is something that's not it's not a rare occasion in los angeles for there to be a shooting now this one didn't happen in the city of los angeles but you know in the greater los angeles area i think this is needs we need to call on the police departments you know across the nation because obviously happens everywhere to be retrained so that you know they had they take a more peaceful approach to solve situations that can be resolved you know the man is video he was not acting violently he was not a threat at all but here in los angeles we always feel that you know whether it be racial profiling things always needs of police brutality and it's very unfortunate and i
