a search at sea that is now under way in southeast asia for a passenger jet. it is airasia flight 8501. 162 people were onboard when it left indonesia for singapore around a5:30 eastern yesterday evening. indonesian officials say 45 minutes later the plane disappeared from radar. airline officials say they lost contact with the jet at about 724 eastern. >> it was due to land at 8:30 eastern last night. they're searching the waters for any trace of that flight. families, as can you imagine, desperate to learn any information about the fate of their loved ones. >> 162 people were onboard that missing plane including seven crew members. the passengers were from six different nations. 155 indonesians, that includes the crew, three from south korea, malaysia, one, one from singapore, one from the united kingdom and one person from france. and we're just learning and this is just come in the last couple of minutes, that the french national onboard was the first officer on that plane. that means he was the co-pilot. his family was made aware of the situation. french

before you is a contract for the design as much ass of what we call the head work system at the southeast plant. it is part of the overall sewer system improvement program and part of the plan to invest $2 billion in the gt southeast plant in renovation to bring that plant up to modern use. the head works is the initial area where the sewage is brought to the plant and processed through the plant into the plant for bio solid digestion. our plan is to move through the design phase at a quick phase and move into construction in approximately 2017, concurrent with construction of the bio solids project which is already under contract and design with a contract you approved with brown and caldwell so we ask your permission to move forward. >> you were speaking there on item 7. you want to speak on item 6 as well? >> i had a staff person who was supposed to talk about item 6. i will tell you the city attorney tells me i have a conflict of interest with urs because my wife works with urs. i will state that out front and say i had nothing to do with the decision to bring this original contract t

special prayer services and memorials have been taking place across southeast asia to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the tsunami. people held traditional ceremonies to remember those they lost. many on holiday also lost their lives. their families and friends placed wreaths. memorials were held in india and indonesia. for many of the survivors the memory of that day a decade could go is raw with hundreds of unidentified bodies laying in unmarked graves. our correspondent joins us now. >> reporter: this is one of the areas that was worst hit by that wall of water some 10 meters high, 30 feet from the ground that slammed into this region ten years ago today. some 8,000 people died in all -- most of the westerner that perished were here. we're hearing from the deputy prime minister and wreaths have been laid on that giant police boat just behind me. it weighs several tons and it's a symbol of the tragedy here. it was picked up and tossed like a toy about a mile inland when that tsunami wave hit. and there are flowers all around representing those people that died. as i say, this is

the heaviest of rain will be in this area here in the southeast. we're going to see some showers moving into d.c. and new york city. that could mean maybe some airport delays. so make sure you check with your carrier before you go, but the good news is it's rain versus snow for most of us. so the roadways shouldn't be too bad. just be careful. but then we're going to focus here in the west where we have our next big storm coming in. this one is going to be with us for a long time. it's going to have a lot of impacts in the west with a lot of snow. we're talking in the order of feet in some cases, lots of wind with this and even southern california will see rain and even some snow. denver three to five inches, possibly vegas seeing a little bit of light snow here by midweek. so, yes, cold air is coming in. and we're going to be seeing this eventually heading out to the central u.s. where we're going to see rain and even snow with it. so a long-lived storm, i should say, heading east over the next week which could impact a lot of travelers. back to y

the airbus built to navigate through severe weather conditions such as the ones we are seeing in southeast >> oh, yes. definitely. it's a state-of-the-art aircraft very well equipped for severe weather conditions. it's very likely that the response of the pilots might have caused the situation in which they have lost control over the aircraft. >> you talk about the response of the pilots. but officials say that no distress call came from the plane. is that normal? is that something common? >> well, that can happen. if pilots come into a very difficult situation, it's not making sense to make a mayday call because they want to solve the situation first. i think everything is speculation at the moment because its way too early, and as far as i know they don't have found any debris or the black boxes, so it can happen, yes, the pilots do not take a course. >> what will they be trying to find now in the search and rescue operation resuming when day life breaks? will they look for the trans ponders of the aircraft? >> i think that it's the first thing, what they are doing because the trans pond

southeast asia has seen five major crashes this year alone. these accidents ever occurred during a time of surging demand for air travel in the region since 2010 the number of passengers carried annually in the asia pacific region has jumped to 1 billion a 66% increase, that's more than europe and north america combined. according a the wall street journal, there aren't enough training programs in asia to produce enough qualified pilots to meet that demand. airlines have had to hire pilots from the u.s. and europe to if i am the gap. that has led to communication issues in the cockpit. the third problem is lower pay in asia for air traffic controllers, mechanics and regulators leading to lower safety standards. one more note about indonesian air travel, many of their airports lack wind shear detect equipment, probably not an issue in the airasia flight 8501 crash because it was at 30,000 feet and yet one more thing that makes indonesias air travel less safe. >> the rough weather suspected of playing a role in the downing of flight 8501 has als
