the biden administration vowing to address shortages across the southeast.griff jenkins live in washington, serious business. >> reporter: prices are skyrocketing, more than 1000 gas stations have run out of gas in the southeast, look at this, 16% in north carolina, 10% in georgia and virginia, 8% in south carolina, 3 and a half in florida. governors in north carolina, georgia, virginia and florida declaring states of emergency is the epa issued fuel emergency waivers to alleviate shortages in 12 states and the district of columbia, those waivers allowed off state gasoline, summer or winter gas through the end of this month to bolster fuel supplies. meanwhile at the white house energy secretary jennifer grahnholm is urging drivers not to panic. >> let me emphasize there was no cause for hoarding toilet paper at the beginning of the pandemic, there should be no cause for hoarding gasoline especially in the light of the fact that the pipeline should be substantially operational by the end of this week. todd: the pipeline is prepared to deliver an additional 2

a friend travelling to the southeast. they're not sure that they can get an uber from the airport to where they're staying because of the gas shortages. there's so many things out there that we'll see that will affect the reopening. it's not like we invented new technology. you have the new demand. we're just reopening. i can't stand the idea of the american rescue plan. that's hog wash. it's the american reopening plan and there's some really big-time growing pains that go with it because i get it. i see where you can have inflation with the amount of money the government is spending and the amount of money in the system. a lot of the problems we're having out there are short term demands, low supply problems that will sort themselves over time. i guess that's what you get that word and i hate the word transitory. i want to see what it looks like when things level out. we have to spend $10 trillion we didn't have, right? we're going back to our gdp of 2.5% if we're lucky under this guy and number 3, we're going to face a

this appears to be a shopping mall just to the southeast of where the fire is located.nd so folks probably smelling the smoke from that fire. but it is also the same pushing that away from any of homes along that area. so that is some good news for them. the winds have been picking up though, in sppts. in fact, some of those winds, a little bit stronger. we've had some gusts this afternoon as strong as a 30 miles per hour. but so far right now, not as windy at this time in the samara fell. you see some of those winds to 17 right now. 1718, miles an hour. so strong enough to push that fire along but not strong enough to really get a raging out there. but we're going to be dealing with these kind of conditions all summer long as we're going to see some very dry conditions and drought conditions here in the bay area and then all of a sudden we're getting onshore winds, the sea breeze which are typical. we get them all summer long and you can get the fires of blowing around the bay area quite rapidly through some of the brush. take a look toward the east bay. see there shad

it's in the southeast, a brief reprieve for monday for the northern cities.rrying all the way into wednesday. for some of these cities, it's not just one day of record heat, it's going to be multiple days of record heat. atlanta, looking at 90s, pretty much starting tomorrow through the upcoming week. charleston. washed. you see that dip on monday. they have rain in the forecast. once you get to wednesday you're right back up into the 90s. we talked about this. for some of these areas, this is well ahead of schedule. june 3rd is when we should normally be having our first 90-degree day in new york. boston also looking to hit 90 over the next couple of days. they don't normally get their first 90-degree day until june 8th. even atlanta, what you would think of, christi, we call it hotlanta, but we don't average our first 90-degree day for several days from now. >> hotlanta earlier than usual. thank you very much. >>> sacramento state university celebrating their grads in a unique way, with a car-mencement to receive their diploma and a gift from the university

this is what we've seen so much across the last week across areas of the southeast.back to normal? >> an area like d.c. being less significant in size -- well, maybe 7 to 14 days. it really just depends on when people can calm down, when we realize the fuel is flowing. it is flowing, by the way, but you wouldn't know based on the numbers. that's because incredible demand is still happening. >> in other words, we still have two more weeks in the southeast. people still have two more weeks of lines like this? i mean, what does this mean for memorial day? >> i wouldn't say lines so much. i'll quantify it like this. i think headaches will still happen when you buy gasoline. it's not going to be like cruising into a station. you still may have to use the gas buddy for the next week or two until you can pull into that station and get lucky enough to fill up. >> what about gas prices, what do you think gas prices are going to look like this summer? >> well, probably higher than we've seen in the last couple of years. last year with covid-19, so much was affected, prices wer
