would like to talk about today is our engagements and how we see next steps when it comes to southeast asia in particular. i would be happy to take questions and comments about the whole of asia but the particular focus today is going to be on southeast asia on a whole and i would like to begin with something that's extraordinarily important. i think occasionally you will find discussions about whether the united states has -- is back in asia or particularly stepped up our game. i would tend and i would like to try to reject some of those concepts because i think one of the most important things for american foreign policy and asia as a whole is that for the last 30 years it has been primarily partnership. and the fact that we can count on strong bipartisan-centrist commitment from both parties to an expansive engaged strategy in asia has been one of the principal achievements of american foreign policy in asia and it has been one of the most important things that we can count on going forward. and so i think one of the things that i would like to see going forward, and i would counselor my

not only its role as a leader in southeast asia but its role increasingly beyond southeast asia in the middle east and beyond. we are finding the experience of indonesia in the last several years speak extensively and importantly to countries in the middle east that are struggling with a number of very trying and difficult domestic issues. we have been very pleased at the progress we have seen with the government working closely with the foreign minister, we have made a number of decisions about partnerships about how we work together on maritime security, a range of economic initiatives. we are beginning to see a degree of progress in relations between washington and manila that have been difficult to get traction and refining their attraction as we go forward. everyone appreciates the important role that singapore has played. i will talk in a moment about the posture in which the united states at the same time maintaining a very strong commitment in northeast asia is seeking to do more than southeast asia to send a diversified message and increasingly link operationally the concept o

all southeast asia and asia there are a lot of similarities. >> he is a male entity. he is not -- are you referring to the story? >> it's interesting you should say that. a unique indian concept is one of half male, half female. and that is -- unlike some dances the solo dancer portrays all of the parts in the story. you can portray a feminine aspect and then masculine aspect with the bow and arrow. the male has to portray feminine and the female has to portray masculine. there is a very fierce dance and a soft sort of dance and every dancer has to learn all those aspects. it's very, you know, my teacher i call him a guru in this art form you have to study very, very hard. you have to learn about all the cultural aspects. he says it's liberating because he enjoys and has to learn to bring up the feminine aspect. he's a strong character it's a challenge for him and he likes it. the stories are metaphor cal. i don't look at this that this is a man or woman. there are qualities we all have that some of us are in touch with and are not. in our culture we think people shou

many of the trips have been to the southeast asia.he has a couple of remaining countries she would like to go to all of the southeast asian countries during her tenure in office. we signed the treaty and the cooperation that's an important source of guidepost to get through that allows us to have more intense engagement on a variety of not only bilateral initiatives but institutional initiatives as well. president jul instructed the department to undertake the brummer review on burba and we went through that process over the course of the first eight months, and we put in place very careful new strategy which is designed both to keep our pressure in place but also to explore opportunities for consequential engagement with the new leaders in particular we were one of the first nations to appoint an ambassador in jakarta. we believe one of the most important initiatives that can occur on the course of the next several years and the infrastructure of the institutions you see the developing in a variety of places that in particular when i

now we're taking a look at the weather across asia and the southeast. lots of tropical activity to watch out for. we have two tropical depressions now in the pacific, and they're also already bringing plenty of showers to areas like the philippines, taiwan, as well as southern china. it is going to continue to be looking wet over the next few days. china will also contend with two lows here that are coming in from the west, and they will both be bringing showers. it looks like it could intensify a little more in parts of mongolia and northeast china today. now, for japan, too, that seasonal rain front remains plenty active. we see more showers across a lot of the country, even into northern czechians. it will include the quake-effected hours. really showers continued to widespread with thundershowery, some stormier weather in the south. more showers are coming your way. flood risk remains very, very high. highs for tuesday, 28 in tokyo, to steamier than yesterday, and it's hot for seoul, 30 degrees here. 34 for beijing. now, over towards the americas an
