news4's darcy spencer is live in southeast d.c. to talk about what's next for these students at savoy elementary school. darcy? >> reporter: erika, school officials decided on friday that they would temporarily close savoy elementary school. we learned late today that the students who attend this school are going to go to a separate school while these health concerns are addressed. savoy elementary school in southeast temporarily shut down over concerns about bedbugs and a rodent infestation. school is canceled monday and tuesday for the hundreds of students who attend savoy. starting wednesday, they're being bused here to this school is southeast where their school is thoroughly cleaned. >> i think at a certain point, city leaders began to realize that both as a matter of practicality and perception, the school needed to be closed so that parents could have confidence in bringing their students back. >> reporter: education leaders tell news4 that parents and teachers have been raising concerns about the problem since november. but

watch out for residual r the la metro. >> hun southeast d.c. are getting a break from school work. but it's not the break that many parents kcould have ever imagined. justin finch is live with what's happening next. >> just before 6:00 this morning, workers began reporting for duty here at savoy elementary, working to rid the campus of bed bugs and rodents as soon as possible. this deep cleaning could take weeks. inside workers are replacing soft items like rugs and cots and blankets a s pillows and wi down classrooms. then wednesday they again reporting to the old elementary campus on 8th street on southeast. meantime, today and tuesday students can get meals at the berry farm rec n from 8:00 ch itoready from 1010 1:00 p.m. and dinner is served from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on savoy's front door there are signs advising parents to consult with help experts if they are worried about their kid' exposure to bed bugs. there are complaints of rodents and bed bugs on the campus going back as far as november. and once the cleaning is done here it must clear a hgt department evaluation. jus

the second was in southeast d.c. along mississippi avenue. the d.c. u chief sam ford reports it was one of two fires just blocks apart. they kept crews busy in the district. sam: a busy afternoon for firefighters in southeast. starting with fires likely sent in wooded areas on opposite side of mississippi avenue. firefighters moved in with the fire extinguishers in one section while dousing tree tops with h the other. a mile and a half away on stanton road an apartment building burned. five members of a family had to flee for their lives when the building caught fire. >> a big burst of smoke came out of my kitchen. i gran and i grabbed my kids and my son. >> i didn't know what it was until she screamed there was smoke in the kitchen. sam: on the floor below, the landlord and other men were working. a soldering pipe caused in plumbing work set the place on fire. >> were you scared? >> yes. >> no. i wasn't. sam: firefighters found and delivered to the family two guinea pigs who had been left behind. spike and midnight are their names, christmas gifts tha

now to that other breaking story in southeast d.c. >> there has been a police-involved shooting on talbereet and talbert terrace. megan, what's going on? >> well, if you take a look over my shoulder here, you can see the u.s. park police cruiser that was involved in all of this. around 4:00 in the morning, we're told that that officer was trying to make a traffic stop here at talbert terrace and talbert street. as he got out of his cruiser, a vehicle that he pulled over, that suspect driver tried to ram him, ram the cruiser and that's when the police officer, the park police officer opened fire. it is unclear at this point whether or not the driver of that vehicle was hit in the gunfire. all of that still investigation. but the intersection the blocked off. don't have any updates on the officer's condition at this point. but certainly they are looking for witnesses, as well, anybody who saw anything is asked to come forward. back to you in the studio. >> megan, thank you. >>> a lot of arrests overnight in california after protests over this potentially upsetting video showing an off-duty
