our air quality is very good compared to southern california. of course, there's a lot of smoke from that for them. it's moving southward because of those northerly winds. it's pushing southward right down to baja, california and out to sea. so so far we're protected more or less from some of that smoke. but we do have our own wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour with this wind advisory. you can see these colors just lighting up. magenta isn't reds and yellows and oranges that shows the areas of strongest wind and even overnight looks like we're going to see some strong winds even in the santa cruz mountains. so we're looking for is raining not on this, not in this for future cast. what we're seeing is just the continued offshore flow of winds. here's area of low pressure cut off from the jet stream that moved out of off to sea. but it also serves to strengthen the tightened that pressure gradient, which is what causes the winds to really well. so we're just seeing dry, dry, dry conditions. and that will continue for quite some time. stephanie. kat

wildfires in southern california. take a look at all the smoke that is coming in from these fires, from the wildfires that are burning there, and it's moving out over the ocean here. so right now it is not coming into the bay area, but that is going to change. they do have air quality alerts until tomorrow night. i suspect this will get extended when you take a look at the air quality there. it is not good. orange is indicating poor for sensitive groups. red is unhealthy air across the region. so we're going to look at the smoke forecast in the upper parts of the atmosphere. while it generally stays right around southern california and over the pacific ocean. watch what happens heading into tomorrow afternoon. some of that smoke starts to come in in the upper layers of the atmosphere, towards the southern part of our viewing area. it's not going to translate down to the surface initially, but this is where it's coming in. that could change. you know that that has happened before. so just keep that in mind. if you are

upping fire danger for southern california. more of just interruption to an otherwise beautiful day for us here at home. we are seeing winds regularly gusting into the 30 to 40 mile per hour range. we do have high wind advisories for the northern part of the bay area in our upper elevations. wouldn't be surprised to see a few more advisories popping up. these are in effect from this morning all the way through tomorrow morning as that wind event will continue, especially overnight tonight as that low passes right past us. and with that southern california is actually expecting the strongest winds down south tonight into tomorrow morning. look at how much of the la metro area is lit up in yellow, orange and red. this is areas with extreme fire. danger pairing of those dry winds. all the dry grass and brush that we have down there as well as the very low humidity. so scary situation for la. absolutely. still offshore winds will carry smoke away from the coastline. so no major smoke impacts, especially not for us in the bay area.

tonight for parts of southern california. clearly, the fire danger is going to remain high going into the weekend as they have just issued a fire weather watch that starts saturday evening goes until sunday afternoon. we're looking at a strong santa ana wind event with gusty winds and low humidity. here are the current wildfires. the largest is the palisades fire at just over 21,000 acres. they are making some progress with containment on the fire lines, and that's because the winds have started to back off. 34 camp fire and the winds have veered direction, coming off the on and blowing towards the land. so here's a look at what you can expect. a little breezy to gusty at times, but not nearly as strong until tomorrow afternoon. the winds pick up going into tomorrow night. you can see they're 38 miles an hour there in some areas. and this gusty wind pattern with the low humidity downsloping winds is going to remain the concern. we have a wind advisory going up for our hills from midnight saturday until sunday morning, as we a

commissioner ricardo lara is in southern california now, and lara says that he'll issue a moratorium to prevent homeowners there from having their insurance canceled due to the wildfires for one year. that's similar to what happened here in northern california with our fires in the past. the l.a. fires come just as some insurance companies, such as mercury, announced this week that they plan to return to issuing policies in areas of northern california, such as paradise, that had been devastated by fires and abandoned by many insurers. the state had negotiated new rules with insurance companies. the department of insurance says the la fires will not impact those new rules, allowing insurance companies to use new tools to better assess fire risk as they set their premium prices and coverage. >> california has been the only state requiring insurance companies to use backward looking historical data when they look at their future rates. and so that's the change. insurance companies are going to be able to use forward looking, what we call catastrophe models. and those models have to use

but the air quality southern california, it's been an issue down south. of course, they've had the fires burning there. and that has been a major problem in southern california as we continue to see some of the fire action down there. they'll continue to have some of the problems with that air quality as well. so unfortunately, they're gonna have to deal with that. we're going deal with the sunshine and really nice pattern almost makes you feel badly that outside right now you've got clear skies and it's been beautiful all the way to the coastline. just those offshore winds and those temperatures. yeah, the records of just been something. how about 75 degrees? that was a record that beat the one set back in 1962. sfo. 71 that tied a record set back. also in 1962, and a record of the oakland museum at 70 degrees. but all around and these temperatures have been something else. so out the door right now, you're still looking at 74 in santa rosa. 57 degrees in nevada currently 58 degrees in sausalito. 64 in san francisco around the state dry as can be can't f

and we are hearing today from tech companies both in southern california and northern california, using ai and drones to detect flare ups and then to try to reach the fires as quickly as possible. they're among the newest weapons in the wildfire fight drones, bringing necessary equipment into a fire zone and getting closer to flames than humans would be able to safely. drones can also map the firefight, along with satellites dubbed eyes in the sky by nasa, especially with the satellites that measure the whole planet and can observe the whole planet over long periods of time. some of the folks here at ames are using the suborbital assets to study more closely and with better spatial resolution. the fires. the tech is often pointed towards flames by companies like annette, based in los angeles, fighting fires with ai powered hardware and software that can detect smoke from massive distances and determine whether it's a threat. so as soon as we've identified with the sensor, there's something going on, there's heat. they can take an image and send that image confirmation right away to the

let's go back a few hours, high resolution satellite over southern california today. there is still a plume of smoke. that one is coming off the palisades. so out of all the fires in southern california right now, it's the palisades fire that is still emanating and putting up a plume of smoke. we can see that when we look at it this way. the eaton fire would be here and the other smaller fires are up that way. so on the one hand, you don't want to see any smoke. it was pretty quiet the first half of the day and it kind of picked up about the last two hours, but here's the comparison. going to switch from looking at today and instead we'll look at what this looked like yesterday and this wasn't even during the peak of this. it was worse two days before that. so there is improvement at least in terms of how the fire's behaving today and it makes perfect sense if you look at what the wind's doing. this is that point in time we've been pointing towards the last day and a half saying wait till we get to friday afternoon. things will calm downand sure enough, there's a lot

not yet in southern california. i mean, there is such a dividing line here. i mean, we, you know, some areas have done okay in northern california, others have done quite well. but southern california is just i believe this is the driest start to their rainy season. i believe i have to dig a little deeper, but since july 1st, i mean, there's been absolutely nothing. 15 116 one hundreds in san diego and la. and since october 1st, there's been even less than that. so i mean, it's just been remarkably wet to the north and just amazingly dry. it's terribly dry to the south. they get a lot of high clouds spilling over that's coming around the air flow coming in for 18,000ft, 20,000ft. but it's all about the wind. malibu hills, still 65mph. malibu 56, right at pch and on the beach, 41mph. so there still gusts. i did see some around 70 to 80mph. and the humidity levels are just below 10%. now on some. the problem is, one of the issues here is i think a lot of the weather observations are gone and they think they've been lost. so i have to use areas kind of far away.

you combine that with a severe drought across southern california, and you can see why the fire risk is in the extreme category shaded here in pink. so let's check out the rainfall for the water year so far since october 1st, northern california has been doing pretty good 138% of average for redding, 108. in sacramento, even san francisco is above. but look at the southern california regions only three hundredths in los angeles at 1% of average, san diego only 4%. here's the setup. high pressure building in behind a low that has dropped down. the winds are just funneling between the high and the low, and so southern california is going to get the brunt of this. looking at live doppler seven, we do have a few clouds passing through the region. the winds that we had have backed off since yesterday 34 miles an hour. hawkeye though atlas peak is 20, so it's still breezy in the north bay hills. and that goes on tonight. calistoga, 29 miles an hour in the wee hours of the morning. and then the winds will really dial back. here's a look at the peak gusts. healdsburg hills, 79 miles an hour.

increase in wildfire activity just two weeks into the year because of the fires burning in southern california. so far, california is experiencing a 120% increase in fire compared to the five year average. when it comes to total acres burned. california's experiencing a 293,000% increase, with 40,000 acres burned in just the first ten days of this month. cal fire is reminding homeowners to create a defensible space around their property. and some parents are wondering how to talk to their children about what is happening in la right now. child psychiatrist say anxiety in children is normal during disasters. some doctors say it's important to validate your child's feelings, to let them express themselves, and to encourage them to maintain their daily schedule. >> you might think that the entire city of la is on fire or something like that. they can develop some kind of anxiety disorder if they're really afraid, if they are living in the acute stress situation, they are constantly feeling that something traumatizing is going to happen to them. and it is not healthy for kids. so we really need to

right now is a pivotal point in the fight against the southern california wildfires. here is the good news. there have not been any new fires, but they are still in the thick of it this afternoon. biggest fires burning right now, still the palisades fire along the coast, and the eaton fire further inland. together, they burned an area about the size of san francisco and concord combined. the eaton fire destroyed or damaged more than 7,000 buildings, and killed at least 15 people. this afternoon, it's 35% contained. because of the winds, power has been shut off to certain areas, trying to prevent new fires. but those winds have not grounded fire fighting aircrafts, which is good news, at least for now. firefighters say they have been able to keep the palisades fire from growing today, which killed at least nine people. it is 17% contained. thousands of people remain under evacuation orders, including the city of brentwood. national guard blocking. firefighters saw gusts in the area as high as 50 miles per hour. a live look at what the firefighters are up this evening.

this is what southern california looks like right now. let's come back over here and bring up the smaller monitor. the most recent fire has broken out on the west side of the san fernando valley called the kenneth fire. if we can come in for as tight of view as we can, that would be this new one of watch right here. you'll see a plume of smoke that appears out of nowhere. that's the most recent one that has started and for those who are familiar with southern california, if you've got friends or family down there, this is the san fernando valley. this is a part of southern california which as of yet has not been experiencing the wildfires. so that one's new. that's the original palisades fire there. you can see that one is really putting off another good plume of smoke today and burning a little higher up towards the ridge of the santa monica mountains. it's kind of going the other way than it had been, going upslope primarily. this is the eaton fire burning in altadena. those are the three primary ones and the smoke kind of merges. it's
