some of the waves in southern california are 20-feet high. joy benedict is in new porteach where the high surf has become i guess quite the spectator sport and i guess a little dangerous, too, right, joy? >> reporter: it is very dangerous. but it is awesome to watch. and it is awesome to see. it is just mother nature at its best, so to speak. but the water today certainly is for the experienced. the expert surfer. they're not wanting anybody who is not experienced with surfing in the water right now. but take a look at all of these spectators out here. we're at the balboa peninsula, new port beach and we have about 1,000 people on the coastline and a couple of young kids having a good time, of course. what they are watching is what you will see right now, in the video. and that is 18-foot waves, crashing down, on what is called the wedge here on the balboa peninsula. and its body surfing only on this beach. about 10 to 5:00 every day and it is not stopping folks from flowing themselves in the ocean literally on their own hoping to be tossed around by mother nature. it i
