the trans-canada keystone pipeline southern leg began today.s a 48 a-mile pipeline. this is really key, because you have four refineries here, big refineries, exxon, motifa, and motal and have a wlero. >>> this is really significant. that oil will be able to reach about 25% of the nation's rye fining capacity in the gulf coast. that's when you include the refineries that are nearby lake charles and also in new orleans. moving this light sweet crude in this way benefits the refiners, saves them roughly $15 per barrel to do it via pipe. this raises the question, of course, what about the northern leg of keystone. it could bring another 830,000 barrels of heavier crude from alberta, canada to the gulf cost. the cost saving there about $20 to $25, so you can see why the refiners are guest behind it. the canadians are growing somewhat impatient as they await a decision, recently say that president obama has punted on this sure, and secretary of state john kerry says the u.s. will not be sbushd making a final decision. but thens of thousands of jobs

the southern leg of the keystone oil pipeline the proposed stretch of the keystone pipeline awaiting approval from president obama is the northern leg, which would stretch from nebraska into canadaay, it was the southern leg of that pipeline that opened it carries crude oil through the state of texas through the gulf of mexico. a number of land owners have been fighting that pipeline for months. as of yesterday, it's up and running. in response, those land owners announced they have launched a new group called texas pipeline watch to insure that any leaks along that pipeline are detected as soon as possible. this is some video the group sent us today of their initial inspections along the newly pumping pipeline to tell us they have checking temperature gauges along the pipeline as well as visiting pump stations along the route. they are calling the texas pipeline watch, texas's biggest neighborhood watch program. you might not expect that kind of thing in an oil and gas state like texas, right? but it turns out, texas pipeline watch isn't an anomalous thing. there are things going on in texas and texas politics right now that might surprise you. this is the city of azle texas, i

in traders are attributing it to the fact that we are starting to see shipping on trans canada's southern oklahoma, which is depressed u.s. oil prices and the wti oil contract and we are seeing as a result the spread there, the narrowing of the spread between the brent crude contract and the wti contract, as well. brent crude though also getting a lift approaching $108 a barrel. we're watching what's happening in natural gas. yes, this cold spell is lingering and in fact we're seeing temperatures some 30 degrees below normal in many parts of the country. that is having an impact on natural gas demand and that's having an i pact on national gas prices. also near the highs of the session up 4% or so today and even into the stock markets we're seeing prices that while futures are 2.5 year high we're seeing highest price on record in the northeast in the cash market. we've had some difficulty with some pipeline and balances and that's caused prices and cash market to spike up some $100 above where they normally trade right about now. >> thank you very much, sharon epperson. what a day in the
