a hurricane warning has been issued for the southern coast of massachusetts as people all along the eastern seaboard are bracing for the arrival of earl. president obama ordered federal agencies to coordinate relief efforts. the governors of north carolina virginia and maryland have already declared states of emergency. the category 4 storm is expected to make landfall in north carolina tonight with winds nearing 140 miles an hour and then move north from there. continental, airtran and delta are allowing passengers booked in and out of airports affected by hurricane earl to change the travel plans without having to pay a penalty. del dah's weather advisory is encouraging customers, in fact, to consider postponing or rerouting the travel to avoid possible inconvenience at east coast airports. they warn some flights may be delayed or cancelled due to storm conditions. >>> 8:41. we've been telling you about our breaking news. there's been another oil rig explosion off the coast of louisiana. we're hearing people are in the water. we have few details but we'll give you an update. >>> and the c

and large and destructive waves especially along the southern coast.where we plan to ride out this storm. a lot of folks are taking this serious as you can see video of people boarding up businesses and homes. front street in hamilton, where most of the stores and restaurants and bars are in the main center of bermuda, many of those have been boarded up. the streets are starting to clear out the people who are still out, many of them are going to the stores for one last grocery run or hardware store run. they've sold out of a lot of essentials. running out of batteries and flashlights. most have sold out of tarps and gas cans and generators sold out a couple days ago for emergency power purposes. a lot of boats on the island. we've seen some of them being pulled in and stored for safety. there are still many hundreds ofboat boats that are tied up or anchored just off of shore. those boats are going to be left there throughout the storm. their owners are obviously keeping their fingers crossed they are able to survive the winds and the tidal surge as we

the biggest problem appears to be beach erosion at least along the southern coast.ong their beachfront bar and restaurant areas and they definitely have trees down there as well. we've talked to belco, bermuda electric power company, 80% of this island is still without power this morning. roughly 28,000 of the 35,000 customers in the dark. they say they have some serious issues, considerable damage to the electrical distribution system. island wide. so that's their big concern and their big focus this morning is sending crews out and trying to start repairing the power that has been knocked out to much of this island but again, they definitely dodged a bullet, as you know, this was a cat 4 earlier in the week. to go down to a cat 1 and to do this much, we can't imagine what a 2 or 3 would have done here, steve. >> no kidding. conditions should improve throughout the day as it moves away from bermuda. there on the island, rick leventhal, thank you very much for weathering the storm overnight. good job. >> sure. >> couple of other quick headlines for you now. the lead
