in march, seven marines were kid in a crash off of florida and in january two were killed in a training accident in southern california. two arm storms yesterday were injured when their helicopter made a hard happening in colorado. they are expected to recover. >> two schools in the santa cruz mountains need your help to get back on their feet. we were in los gatos on mop when a fire gutted a community center used by two schools. leaders are issuing a call for donation to restore and replace what was lost. matt keller is at loma prieta elementary. there was $1 million in damages. >> a lot people in the santa cruz mountains use the loma prieta community center. there is a fence up for keep the people out because of the fire. there is a big effort to replace what was lost. here pictures from the loma prieta foundation website. can you see how badly it damaged the building between the loma prieta and c.t. english school in los gatos. a 17-year-old and his friends were there to smoke marijuana and nope had any they kept carpet by lighting a boss on fire and the remains were put in a garbage can leading to fire.

headlines, which is most southern communities, number one, and number two, what happened when the television cameras went away in most parts of the region? and pensacola, florida, was one of the perfect places to exam both of those questions. i found that the majority of the struggles that pensacola encountered, the more serious struggles happened after facilities integrated, happened after the lunch counters integrated, happened after employers began to hire more african-americans. it actually happened after king's designation in 1968. so i think -- assassination in 1968. so i think the pensacola story is important to tell because its gets us involved in what happened in most southern communities after integration. they realized that integration was mandated by law, that if things didn't go well in their community, that it could have the potential for a place like birmingham or montgomery or memphis where there would be a large-scale demonstration, there would be a large-scale campaign where outside groups like, sclc, come or snic corps would in as happened in many areas in the late 1960's. i think pensacola had so much riding on its tourist economy and most

southern colleges. i know you have not heard of the integration of florida institute of technology which was found in 1959 as brevard engineering college. the first building was pub junior high school. because it was public school it meant blacks were not allowed n. julius montgomery signed up to be the in the first class of brevard engineering college. superintendent of schools when he saw a black man who got his undergraduate at tuskegee trying to enroll in the college. he called the president of the new college that said the school would not open if julius montgomery was a student there. the president of the college begged julius montgomery to please drop out of the school so that the school could open. and in an act of what i considered to be immense selflessness, julius montgomery agreed. he enrolled a year later and, the school did open. they did allow him in a year later. and now the florida institute of technology every year offers the julius montgomery pioneer award to an african-american who has made a contribution to the community, to thank him for this selfless act. not everyone in our book wo
