iowa? >> reporter: today he had two evens in new hampshire. he toured a small factory in the southernt to the state and drove north with a number of voters. he took questions about governor perry. he made the point of saying he was going to continue with his current strategy. they want to campaign in every early state and later state. if you look at the campaign schedule coming up in the next week or two, they're all here in new hampshire. i'm sorry, we lost him. joining me now is mark. mark, you spent the weekend before you got back to new york traveling through iowa. you've been at all the events. let's talk about romney's strategy. is this a good strategy to hang back from iowa and really not engage or does he now to have engage rick perry head on? >> reporter: it's an interesting choice. i think it has to play out on a fast schedule. bachmann has been in iowa for two months. rick perry is going to spend as much time in iowa this week as mitt romney has for the whole year. perry's going to force romney to make some choices. there's an argument for going in. he could argue that the

iowa, finishes second to romney in new hampshire. at that point, perry who will probably win south carolina, becomes a regional southern candidate, not unlike mike huckabee. >> sean: i think he's going to thread the needle and try to appeal to both groups and draw from all sighs, that would be my guess. >> he could fall between two chairs is the problem. >> sean: a lot has happened. we had the debate thursday night. straw poll saturday. pawlenty out. perry in. if you had to assess putting all these new developments together, who stands where at this moment? >> well, again i always see this in terms of semifinals. the right wing semifinal in the centrists semifinal. in the right wing, bachmann clearly did very well. she is moving out from the pack. i would not count out rick santorum, who had a very strong debate performance. and has a perfect foil in ron paul claiming iran would be fine if they got a bomb and they don't intend to get a bomb any way. santorum looked good at the ames poll, he finished fourth and a decent fourth. then with pawlenty out, that's third. i think the other thing -- also don't count out herman cain he has a l

the first stop will be in minnesota, southern minnesota next monday. then on to piasta, iowaty college there. the white house says it will bring government officials and small business owners to talk about ways to accelerate hiring. the last stop will be in western illinois. the white house says the bus tour gives the president the chance to make a more direct connection to the american people and to go some places where air force one simply can't go. now, while this is clearly not a campaign trip, it's an economic trip. iowa, of course, is very important in election year politics. it's an important swing state. and that's where the president will be holding this rural economic forum next week. it comes days after the straw poll in iowa, by the way, where republican also get a chance to show their support or lack thereof for the president's republican rivals. back to you guys. >> steve: all right. steve, north lawn of the white house, thank you very much. meanwhile, we've got your headlines for this wednesday. the president of somalia, vowing to get rid of islamist militants

iowa. mitt romney needs to win new hampshire. rick perry, even though south carolina and texas are far apart, as a deep southern state, he's got toeally win in south carolina, so the question is who could edge in one way or the other? >> who can steal the game essentially? >> right or any wildcards that jump in. >> you mentioned, i think we've got this up and running. let's try new hampshire. new hampshire is a state, this is romney home territory. in '08, mccain won. >> right. where independents can vote in a republican primary, yes. >> this is a must win for mitt romney. there's no way he continues in the campaign? >> there's not a path to winning for romney that doesn't include winning in new hampshire. >> who, in your estimation, or is it too early, because we don't know about iowa, who is the biggest threat there? jon huntsman spending a lot of time and money there, rick perry. >> i think it's too early to do that. we can stake out where the must wins, even before the football season or basketball season began, you could kind of already play out most of the games. there's going to be some variations. >> let's go to our last

iowa. ironically he immediately encountered an identical boundary conflict that he had in ohio. this was between the southern border of viola and the northern border of missouri. the only difference was that he was now the territorial governor opposing the governor of the state. and opposing the way the boundaries had been surveyed compared to the way they might have been stipulated. i will go into the details. the point is, you won. he played his cards differently. he was much more. ultimately i will one that conflict. lucas also wanted a different northern border for iowa. these lines actually makes sense in a way. they follow the mississippi river to the minnesota river. then there is a straight line in the northwest taking it over to the sioux river following that to the missouri river. not illogical. in fact, in its day it made sense in comparison to other states in the northwest territory. it would not look all that different. but, when i what came up for state had with the proposed border a congressman from ohio, opposed it. he reminded congress about jefferson's original vision in 1784 and out congre

iowa, you look at rick perry, he's got to be favored there. but in south carolina, that's the only other state he's really favored in. correct? >> yeah. although he's becoming the southerne south. they get a lot of bonus delegates because they vote republican in so many elections. so you're right in the sense that in iowa, i'd say it's perry versus bachman. but you go to new hampshire and romney has a big lead there. but then you go to south carolina and again, perry is now in the lead. one poll has him in the lead that came out yesterday by 20 percentage points. florida could be the key primary. that's the one that could be the ultimate matchup between romney and perry. >> brian: i can't imagine it. florida a key state. it doesn't make sense. and nevada as well goes to romney. i want to talk about the senate because senator imhoff said it's did -- let's begin in massachusetts. scott brown shocked the world. will he again? what about the rest? >> i think scott brown is favored. he's one of only two republican incumbents. the other being dean heller in nevada, who are really at all challenged in 2012. right now both brown and heller are leading. so that means republicans
