it is snowing in southern maryland, too. this is at the freezing mark. most areas around the freezing mark meaning it is a wet snow. you can see the back end of this fast-moving band of snow, area of snow already beginning to move into the shenandoah valley. as we go through the nighttime hours, as we get through 3:00, 4:00 in the morning, we'll see it wind down right in town three to four inches. and to our south, too. some areas are ending up with more than six inches of snow. i'll tell you the timeline, move things up a little and what about the weekend? i'll join you in a few minutes. >>> different neighborhoods will see different accumulations and different problems. darcy spencer will show us who is monitoring it in montgomery county tonight. >> reporter: we are getting heavy and steady snowfall here in rockville. go to other parts of montgomery county, it may be a different story. that's where the storm center comes into play here, making sure that the resources go where they're needed most. >> you're going to have snow over this top layer of ice.

storm totals a foot in extreme southern maryland to 30 inches locally. dc, north and west of dc, kind of a tough call but a lot of moisture is available. and we are seeing all of this coming in from the south and west. here's some bands now. this is ahead of everything. we have a couple of lulls here. to the south. you see the dark blues, you see that's where the moisture is rich. in fredericksburg it is reporting a little light rain at the moment. temperatures need to get a little colder from where they are. you will see temperatures mid- 30s. some spots like manassas freezing and same with martinsburg. but for the most part we are mild. 34 and a south wind. when the storm starts to crank, things will go to the northeast. with more on the storm and things you should know, here's meteorologist topper shutt. >> we always seem to sweat the big ones and everything is not perfect. for example the rain in fredericksburg we will watch that carefully. for example the flip side of the storm is in georgia. it has moisture as far as pennsylvania. look at doppler 9

not as much fell in southern maryland. in fact, it was mostly all rain in far southern maryland, northern neck of virginia and the eastern shore, lower part there. fartr west and north, a few isolated spots at 5 or 6 inches, but most of the region had around 3 or 4. temperatures right now are in the mid- to upper 30s. so what did stick to the tree branches and shrubbery is beginning to fall. right now in shan tilley, it's at 36 degrees, up from the morning low of 28. they have a gentle wind there. and out of the mountains, temperatures right near freezing, eastern shore, now the mid-30s. and over the last six hours, we've seen the snow did pass north and east of us overnight. now exiting southern new england, heading out to sea. breaks in the clouds with increasing sunshine. the next storm taking shape in texas. they're getting heavy rain there now. that is going to be heading up our way here friday into saturday in the form of, lacks like snow. for the rest of the afternoon, partly cloudy melting snow, light breezes out o

southern maryland and near the bay as well. blizzard warnings in effect for later this evening for all these counties in red, including this highlands of west virginia, washington, frederick county in maryland, carol, howard, ann arundel, northern part of the eastern shore. blizzard warnings means sustained winds of 35 miles an hour or more beginning later on this morning and into the afternoon. the blizzard warnings extend up the jersey coast, southeastern pennsylvania and around the new york city area too. so this storm is having widespread impact. all those other counties and big winter storm warnings including in new york city all the way across pennsylvania and into the ohio valley and the central appalachians. we can see a circulation in the atmosphere. then as it gets off the coast, there will be an explosive development of low pressure here and that low will track along the coast, as it does it will whip in very strong winds. totals of up to 12 inches are likely. we have already gotten up there in the highlands of west v

it looks like stuff in southern maryland, but if i actually bring down the filter, we can eliminate thosechoes. it looks like it's coming down on the regional radars. the real stuff is back in virginia, lynchburg, roanoke down into north carolina and west virginia. that's the stuff behind this line that will move through the area. that's why i'm calling 10:00 to 2:00 to start. a line of severe weather is pushing through the florida panhandle right now. that is one sign of the tremendous amount of tropic at moisture and heat. so we have to deal with that and that's converging with a fading jet stream across the region. the northern southern branches coming together. we'll mix in some of that heat, which means it translates to sleet. that will waste a few hours of snowfall potential. the moisture's there, but we go to sleet this afternoon and add ice onto it. the temperature's in the mid- 30s. once it begins, it will pick up in the fist couple of hours. hopefully you won't get slick. tomorrow's snow, not the heavy wet stuff, but the light fluffy stuff we pick up the totals. you could wake u

many are in anne arundel county and smeco in southern maryland has four outages. >>> and we are tracking the progress of some of those power crews. 9 news reporter alex trevino is in mclean, virginia with more. good morning, alex. >> reporter: goodgood morning, andrea. the big story is broken trees on people's yards. it is hard not to miss in mclean. a lot of limbs on people's yards and one can only suspect it is due to heavy winds. we know 320 families in this neighborhood are currently without power. strong winds took down a tree and landed on some wires at langley high school in the middle of the night which is just behind the neighborhood we are at. the crews from dominion virginia power company replaced the wires only to have another tree topple over the same section of repaired wires. yep, new wires go up and then they come down again. so crews waited for this morning to replace the broken wooded cross arm and restring the wire at that section of the high school for safety reasons. the school is operating on a generator until the power is restored. so they have some lights, just no

the blizzard warning has been posted for parts of southern maryland, and the entire state is kind of hunkering down. for more on the way the state is preparing and how we will handle all of this, let's go back to dave collins. how is it looking? >> it is looking like it is everywhere else. the governor did not waste any time declaring a state of emergency, and he joins us now to talk about it. when does declaring a state of emergency provide? >> it allows us to call up national guard and to provide the local governments and laid the groundwork in case we're able to apply for some federal assistance based on the size of this noble -- and lay the groundwork. >> the size of the snowfall -- in case were ableo apply for some federal assistance based on the size of this snow. >> the size of the snowfall. something to pay for this cleanup? >> none of that is on our minds right now. right now, we are just thinking about how we clear the roads. we budget a certain amount for snowfall. some years, we get lucky, and we get no snow, and in other years, like this, we get pounded. it is just somet
