some areas in southern maryland not showing up have reported snow in la plata and waldorf. we've had heavier bands. it's been cold enough to bring the cold air to the surface and we have turned over to snow. i wouldn't be surprise if sleet is nexting in across charles and calvert. harding county, we've had some areas with over a foot of snow. really incredible in the higher elevations. locally the snow is on top of us. you see how it's brighter here? this is a heavier band of snow. we even had reports of thunder in places like baltimore and cecil county toward philly. this will be lasting throughout the afternoon. north and west has been a real headache. we have the problems on how much we're going to get and here's chief meteorologist topper shutt. >> thanks, hb. a temperature of 32 in damascus. it's accumulating on the roads a little bit. slushy, yes. just outside the weather terrace, the heavy band howard has been talking about has moved away and now starting to melt as we're still 33, 34 degrees. it's a very critical temperature at the surface. upstairs it's cold enough

shore raids and th are concentrated particularly along the northern neck of virginia and in southern marylandher along the shores of potomac on the mare land side but especially along the putuxsan river. the british are targeting them decides that the resistance is eliminated much more quickly and earlier because most of the people living in southern maryland don't really want to be part of this war at all. and they certainly don't want to deal with superior of british forces that are now well-guided by the local experts in the landscape. and it is because of this that the british are able to land without any opposition at benedict in mid-august of 1814 and they are able to advance to the upper reaches of the putuxa river and reach to the out skirts of washington, d.c., without any opposition because it's already been eliminated by the raids of the summer. and they were able to brush aside militia resistance which it belatedly appears at bladensburg and push into washington, d.c., where they famously burn the public buildings. here is a very famous image of that. and you all notice, there is

two teenagers have been arrested, charged with stealing cookies from girl scouts in southern maryland. 18-year-old gabriel smith swiped a wagon filled with cookies from a couple of girl scouts who were selling them on jason's landing way. one of the girls managed to grab the wagon back. smith jumped into a card given by a 17-year-old suspect list of neighbors followed the vehicle while they called police. police eventually caught the teenagers. both have been charged with theft. >> president obama is on his first visit to china in about five years. he is scheduled to take part in three days of talks focusing on strengthening economic ties with the burden -- the growing region. he said america's interest in asia should not be can -- and should not because for concern among china's leaders. to a futureoking where a worker in any of our countries cap for to provide for his family, where his daughter can go to school and start a business and have a fair shot at success. with a fundamental rights are cherished and protected and not denied. >> president obama will begin a series of china. m

shore raids and th are concentrated particularly along the northern neck of virginia and in southern marylandher along the shores of potomac on the mare land side but especially along the putuxsan river. the british are targeting them decides that the resistance is eliminated much more quickly and earlier because most of the people living in southern maryland don't really want to be part of this war at all. and they certainly don't want to deal with superior of british forces that are now well-guided by the local experts in the landscape. and it is because of this that the british are able to land without any opposition at benedict in mid-august of 1814 and they are able to advance to the upper reaches of the putuxa river and reach to the out skirts of washington, d.c., without any opposition because it's already been eliminated by the raids of the summer. and they were able to brush aside militia resistance which it belatedly appears at bladensburg and push into washington, d.c., where they famously burn the public buildings. here is a very famous image of that. and you all notice, there is

however, in southern maryland and on the eastern shore of maryland on those tobacco and wheat plantations, you had enslaved african-americans. and the british were offering freedom to any enslaved african-american who would come over to their side. and especially a year later, in 1814, thousands of african-americans are now coming over to the british and the british are giving them their freedom. most of them were younger guys who could escape. and they had the option of belonging to what they call the colonial core. and these were like royal marines. they were trained as royal marines, and 200 of them, some say 400 of them would become part of this colonial corps. this prompted fear that this might prompt a massive slave uprising in this area prompted by the british. it never happened, but there was a fear it could happen. there was a fear that there would be this uprising, a fear that the british could show up any day and bombard your hamlet or small town. and this is the context. it's not surprising that someone like francis scott key who initially opposed the war takes a more active r
